Bro Suphi

Wowzers! I love TVR#1's (ruby?) long square head w/ excellent cheeks protruding beyond the mouth and TVR#2's majestic tail. Hopefully with your superb care, its wen will improve (like they say white heads tends to develop slower). Most of all, I love their long bodies!

:Congrats1:

Thanks! These guys are not small at all for 6-mo old fish. My bowl's diameter in the photos is 8 inches. Anyway, working on getting the setup out of my bathroom by this weekend so they can get some natural sunlight.

Thats a great wen for six months. Keep in mind, redfinement and wen on in the right places. Overall, here is what I liked about both crosses:

Sug/Kudo- great tail structure(especially the center tail lobes) and good bodies...

Itoh/Kudo- My oh my what tail bracelets and peduncles......

Dan, maybe in the future we can just buy from you or people who plan to breed these guys here instead of importing, lol. That would be ideal.

I finally managed to move the 40G into our living room tonight. Will take some photos/video this weekend. What I'm afraid of is my 2-yr old stuffing the tank with her toys, we'll see...

The 40G already looks crowded with just 2 fish, I think I'm gonna leave my old TVRs in the 80G with the SVRs. I'm hoping that my wife will let me buy a bigger tank in Christmas, the space where the 40G is can easily house 48x36x14 coral tank.

I spent almost all day feeding the fish and went crazy with the camera. They don't have much wen at the top.

Wow what a big difference sv profile is from the tv. Top view definitely looks great!

I wonder if all the TVR babies will have similar sv profile? Sv Head is kind of small for my liking, lol.

Why is it easier to make their heads & tails red than their bodies? What is it with the scales? What can i do to change that? Aside from genetics, I know that being exposed to the sun for a long time in addition to a color enhancing diet should help.

Suphi, your large tosai's are gorgeous. You keep them at 78-80 deg F, huh?

bigbettadan

Sun will darken the red, and algae helps too, but pattern is largely genetic. They do tend to lose red with age.

I think they look great and would just be happy to get them to next season to spawn and see their babies too. At 6 months thay have a long way to go on the head growth so I would not worry at all. It will come in time and they (the heads) look great to me.

Happy Goldfishinging!:angel::angel::)

Eros, my heater is set at 78F just because these guys were raised in Thailand where temp is typically in the 80s. I also put my hands in the water a lot (hand feeding, etc.), so I prefer it warm. I don't think temp matters much unless it's too high or too low.

The Japanese have remained the absolute master of rearing deep colored ranchu. Their fish especially have nice deep red body (not to mentioned $$$). Thai breeders can raise as great quality ranchu up to Tosai, but afterward they tend to lag behind. However, I've been seeing some really nice Nisai and Oya fish on a few Thai websites recently so the gap is closing.

Harzan, from what I've read TVRs usually don't develop good wen until after their first year. We'll see.

bigbettadan
06-22-2009, 08:00 PM
Thats an interesting point. That may have something to do with the fact that the Japanese put their ranchu thru a period of cooler temps/domancy, but then again, maybe not. I do know from my personal experience is the deep red fish I get are the ones outdoors.

Yes, that headgrowth is fine for their age, keep in mind TVRs have refined wen, not a gobby lionhead mass.

I believe both of you ar right. I have been told that the water in Japan is DIFFERENT....enought to make better fish. Koi guys here, in Hawaii, insist on that. Size and color of fish.

As far as head growth, if you want a massive head, look at the older Ranchu champions that people have posted on line....younger fish are better looking, I think anyways.

Uno strain Ranchu used to be raised here and was a deeper red. I cannot seem to find it after Mr. Kobayashi passed away here. I have been told that it is very expensive to buy/import. Anyone have any Uno strain?

BTW....anyone else bought Nankin from Paul?

bigbettadan
06-22-2009, 08:48 PM
There are links to pics the Uno strain still on the interenet, but I don't think anyone has them in North America.... Yea they had deep red heads and massive wen develpment.

I do agree that some fish lose balance as they get big. I personally like the best fish, not the biggest one.

I wanted some of Pauls Nankins bad! But only so much space. I already have 3 ranchu strains(Mita, Itoh/Kudo, and Sug/Kudo) and want to add Monden from Steve eventually. But I am sure I will get some nankins in a moment of weakness sometime...LOL

I just came across a website (monden-ranchu.com) that sells Monden ranchu online. Their good quality BBR goes for $382, there's an adult one that goes for $2,600...ouch. There're some really good-looking ones there.

These 2 are beautiful! I wish I could handfeed my goldfish but then I don't want to contaminate my discus tanks, which I do hand feed.

In the future, I'd love to keep a pair of each from different strains. Right now no space, might have to wait until my kids move out...that'll be a long time.

I frequently visit that site to look at the TVR's pictues and videos. I once emailed him and he replied back after 3 weeks that he doesnt ship to the US (prob. needs a transhipper).

Latest update, after near-death experience last month...phew. The wen growth has improved a bit, especially on the white head. On the red head there's more wen on the side covering the eye when view from the top.

Latest pic, taken today. Haven't done exact measurement but, I believe my redhead is pushing 7 inches from head to tail. Note the slight color smear on the side of the body which I think is caused by color enhancing food (Saki Hikari in my case). They swim around back and forth constantly so it's very difficult to get a good photo.

Too much feed on Saki Hikari Basic(Purple bag) could cause color affect. Mixing it with Saki Hikari Growth will do the trick! Ratio of Saki Green 2:1 Saki Purple.

Suphi - do u still do big water change on ur tank daily? Mine seemed to stop growing :(

suphi
10-29-2009, 05:11 AM
I've reduced WC to every 2 days.

Water in my top-view tank starts to become smelly after 2nd day and it's in our living room. So yeah, I still do 70-80% WC to get rid of the smell. I've also cut down the feedings to twice a day (three times on weekends), been too busy with work and other hobbies.

I only have 2 fish in that tank so I think that's why they're growing faster. Fish in my side-view tank don't seem to grow much. If I had to do it over again, I'd just have a few fish per tank to make sure they get plenty of space to swim around.

Wow!!
Are these from the BBR batch you had or the 2 that you added later?
The one with the white head appears to have added a good bit of new wen growth since the last pictures, love the funtan growth on each !
The bodies appear to have deepened/added girth as well. Thanks for sharing the updated pictures !

I scrubbed down the tank and did 100% WC today. These babies are at 11 months now. The red head's body is almost an inch longer than the white. It's tough getting him to fatten up since he just gets longer instead of wider.

^ These two alone go through 160+ Saki pellets a day, it's getting expensive to keep them fed. I can't imagine having 100+ fish like some of you.

Wow that's a lot of food. These two r looking really awesome! Is the big red/white the size of ur big svr(popcorn)now?

suphi
12-21-2009, 02:49 AM
Ruby (TVR) is still a tad smaller than Popcorn (my SVR), but length-wise probably the same. Popcorn can't take as much food because he has a tendency to float now, so I think Ruby will probably outgrow him next year. These two TVRs can really eat without floating issue...so far. Also remember Saki pellets are quite tiny, so 160 probably isn't as much as you think.

I'm trying to get Ruby to gain some bulk with power feedings, but instead he keeps getting longer. Perhaps he's still having a growth spurt, dunno. I'm gonna move him outdoor in spring, may be that'll do the trick. I'm still mostly experimenting. I just started getting into TVR in Jan so still got a lot to learn in terms of grooming. I know I was definitely underfeeding in the past.
