Hi There. Im new to this forum.

I have about 19 ranchus in my 75g tank. My problem is, someone is scattering eggs and i dont know who. The eggs end up not getting fertilized because either they get sucked into the OHF chamber or the school eats them.

I tried to rub the fishes one by one but no one would excrete eggs.

Could anyone help me identify the fertile fish?

Thanks in advance.......

You need to catch them in the act. The males will be chasing the female, they can be quite relentless. Maybe your female had already released her eggs when you tried to strip. The males will always really sperm for the most part, but the females nada. You have to be careful as you can kill a female that is not ready. If my female does not release easy, move on. Also, I put in spawn mops to in case I miss the spawning......

Hi Dan,

Thanks. Yeah. I already made a spawning mop and place it near the pump where it normal releases. Its been 3 instances already and i still have not caught her in the act. haha. Thanks again.

You have too many ranchus in your tank : 19 for 75 gallons. When do you noticed that there has been spawning activity? Maybe you should try and catch them in the act, often times they are all done by 10 am.

During spawning, the females have heavier and faster breathing, so if in a glass tank this may help you identify the laying female.

I'll be sure to watch out for the heavy breathing....Thanks...

Tank is pretty clear and i have a couple of guesses on who the culprit is. For now, i will just be happy to have a few live eggs hatch. So far, the ones spawned are all dead, where most ended up in the filter wool in the OHF.

Yeah...i have a lot for the tanksize, but i am trying to compensate the bioload with a powerful pump and good aeration.

I do 30% WC weekly. So far the tank is crystal clear 95% of the time.

I posted the pictures in my album......proud "dad" i am. haha.

You need to remove the spawning mop immediately after spawning, place in a small hatching container/tank with an anti fungal agent and a small airstone.

I will do that....thanks. I have metylene blue ready for deployment. Do i need to control the airflow to a minimum in case i get fertilized eggs?
