I need an idea on lighting. I have moved my goldfish into a 150g stock tank, which is currently outside. However, I plan on moving the tank inside for the winter months and I need an idea on how to rig up a light for it.:youtellme: I am not sure what type of light to get, how to rig it up, etc. Any ideas are appreciated!

What is your purpose? Lighting for better color(ie black fish) or just need a light to view the fish? btw welcome to the site. :)

Hi Fred, thanks for the welcome!
I am hoping to rig a light up that mimicks daylight as much as possible. I have a lot of great green algae in the tank right now and I want to hang onto as much as I can when I bring them inside. However, I also need to be careful with water temps, even though I think that will be easier to control in the stock tank than an aquarium. Our house is pretty cool during the winter months because of our high ceilings in the house.

In your case, you need a lighting similar to planted tank. I would get one from http://www.ahsupply.com/. This is the product which Plant ppl use the most. You should aim for 2 watt per gallon for algae to growth well.

I second that. I have a kit from AH Supply and its the best by far.

So, at 2wts per gallon, I will need 300wts of lighting! My next problem is figuring out how to rig all this up to go over the tank.

should aim between 1.5 to 2.0 wpg. What kinda tank do you have?

Its the bulb that matters. You can hang a simple strip light fixture with chains to hang, which can be bought a Lowes. Thats what I hang over my tubs during the winter. I don't really worry about algae then, as the cooler temps slow down their activity. It is a rest period for them. If I am raising up younger ones, of course I will keep them in warmer water.....
