If properly kept, about five years on average for shubunkins. Ten years or more is possible. In a proper pond koi will can live 10 to 20 years. Most koi and goldfish die from poor management, not old age.

I think even in a well kept, properly sized aquarium 10-20 years is not unreasonable. Many of my fish are nearing 5 years now and seem to be just coming into their prime. But as you said, Steve, the vast majority die from poor care.
