Hi all,

The original Blue Egg Phoenix from Hong Kong was almost extinct in the USA. Some of these goldfish were preserved by Russ Taylor and a few other breeders. I was fortunate to get four of these fish from Gary Hater 3 years ago at the BS.

I succeeded to breed them once and have about 8 offsprings and 2 left from my original 4. So, I'd like to know who of you breeders here have these blue phoenixes and how is this breed doing in North America. Should we be worried about losing this strain?

Hi Gerard,

I still have a few in with my koi, and I think Russ and David Lains still have a few. Trouble with these unique fish is that they are never a priority and people have the intention of breeding them but they often get forgotten. They could make a great project to create a LF Ranchu while keeping the line intact.
HNY!

All,

If you are a single tailed fish keeper these are a great companion fish as they swim like rockets:me:

Gerard, do you have any photos?
I'd love to get some eggs or fry should they spawn again.

Thanks for the info Gary, and the website Joe. I guess, I'll put this breeding project in the next season program then.

Sabine, if the breeding works, I'll let you know.

Gerard, do these fish stay blue when aging?

Well, I got the BEP at the 2006 Breeders Social and they were then about 6 months old. So now at about 3 years old, my BEP have stayed almost the same bluish colour. Some that I've seen may have some brownish patches, mine do not have much of these patches.

I received the fish in 2006 from the Gary Hater line from Pete P, and they, too, have remained wonderfully blue - no changes. Two of mine do/did have green patches, but they have nice backs. The tails are not perfectly symetrical, but are extremely long and full.

The one breeding that I did, did not result in all blue fish, however. Out of several hundred fry, only about 30 were "blue". I kept 9 and gave the rest out. Unfortunately, not only have I had a catastrophic problem (power failure during family medical emergency) - I lost all but 2 of the good blues, but the various breeders that I gave fish to no longer have them. I have 6 others that are NOT good blues that I am hesitant to cross back into the line.

The fish that are NOT good blues demonstrated the blue color for the first 2 years of life, but steadily got yellower and yellower. They are more of a yellowish blue - or a blueish green color, now. They are not blue.

I would be very interested in getting a new influx of genetic material in some new blue Phoenix. Mine did not breed this past year - and I really would like to see these fish succeed. They are really beautiful.

Thanks Daryl for the info on your side. So, I understand that you've got about 10 of the BEPS. With the small number of these BEPs, I personnally don't worry about crossing back until the numbers are safe. Please keep us posted.
