Gregg, PVC is fine. Use regular PVC cement unless you only want a temporary installation. Silicone will break down over time. Flush the pipe to waste before using it to get rid of any VOC fumes.

Some people use ABS pipe because it is black and is easier to disguise. However, ABS does not come in the smaller sizes (not less than 1.5 inch). Also, ABS pipe floats while PVC sinks.

Use the uPVC pipe. It is made to last a lifetime. Special glue for these uPVC pipes should be available from the hardware store.

Well I could use it but I don't like the way a white pipe laying in the middle of my pond looks. I am going out to look for sinking black tubing.

You can paint your pipe black with plastic spray paint from krylon or rustolium.

You might get best results if you started with new clean pipe made into a replacement part, cleaned and painted. Give it a few days to dry and cure and you're in business.

I've used this paint in everything from ponds to reefs.

Also, after a month everyting down there is going to look greenish brown anyway.

Krylon Fusion for plastics is reef safe (so definitely safe for freshwater critters). I use it to change the color of my filter tubes to match my backgrounds in my indoor tanks. Like David says, waiting several days is critical to getting a chip-resistant finish. I know the original post was about ponds, but I never miss a chance to extol the virtues of Krylon Fusion - love it!

Here is an example:
