I've been interested in fancy goldfish for a very long time, and have finally decided the time is right to take the plunge. I know very little, but do know that I want to get started with some top quality Ranchu and Ryukins, and hopefully to breed from them in the future. Looks like I have found the right place to ask questions, I have quite a few :)

Hi,
Welcome to GFK. IMO, I would just start with LFS fish for one year. Then upgrade to top quality ranchu in the future.

I can understand why you say start with LFS fish, but I have to buy all my equipment from scratch, I have none. The cost of the fish will not be high compared to the cost of the equipment needed to keep them properly. I don't intend to buy a lot of fish to start with, half a dozen at most.

The cycling of a tank can also be very hard, even deadly, to fish. Are you planning on a fishless cycle?

fishless.
I would second starting with inexpensive LFS fish. Nothing is worse than spending a lot of money and watching a ranchu deteriorate in a couple months, floating in the current, bug eyed on the surface, or to find out you overpaid or bought a stunted fish ect . . . It takes a while to learn. Do what you want but it's a good idea to take things slow.

What concernes me about buying fish from my local fish store is that I am not happy about the way they keep them. They get fish from all over and use the same net to scoop out the dead no matter what the tank. I could well start off with fish that are guaranteed to snuff it within a month. If I get a few fish from a reputable supplier and I still run into problems I will at least have a good idea it was me that caused it.
I do intend to start slowly, and with just a handfull of good fish. I will not be laying out a load of money on stock.
