All,
In my koi and goldfish pond I have a very large bead filter from Aquatic Ecosystems. I set it bad up last weekend and noticed that the flow is not great, after a long back wash and air blow the flow went back up to about 100 gpm but the back pressure is kind of high. I am wondering if you have to open top and stir the beads in the spring. Any experience in this area would be appreciated.....:youtellme:

Sorry, I don't have direct experience with this type of filter, but I've heard they are great for mechanical filtration. They are prone to clogging up especially if you don't have the water coming from a settling chamber.
Get a nexus easy filter, you'll love it! (but not the price)

Gary, if you drained it to winterize then the beads may be cemented together. When the crud dries it sort of glues them. They can cake-up on the laterals too. If you are not getting the same performance then you have some clumping somewhere and may need to open the housing. Pouring in a lot of bleach could loosen them up too. Bleaching before winterizing might prevent the same thing from happening next year.

These guys are the U.S. distributors for EA products. Their EA food always seems to sell out. Maybe you qualify for wholesale? This place is one of the nicest koi outlets that I visited around the Los Angeles area.

This may take a while to convince my wife I need it

You need to completely take that bead filter apart and clean it out good. remove the media and take apart the plumbing. I'm sure you will find that it is quite nasty inside.
As for the EA Nexus, they are probably the best store bought all in one filter available. I have one of their smallest model called an Easy Pod, good for about 2500g that Im going to use on our new goldie pond. I know alot of people that use the Nexus line of filters and the Cetus Sieve that they also make which is a fantastic prefilter sieve used instead of an sc. I have heard very little negative about any of their products.

Ok
I will give it a try when I get back from the City of Cheese Steaks

The easy pod is different in that the outer chamber is empty and serves as the settling chamber instead of a constantly aerated moving filter bed. The kaldness media is in the inner chamber and is static.

Casper....... I understand that Mystic now has a conversion kit available to make them moving beds instead of static. I just may look into that for mine.

Nice, I hope that works out! Of course that means you have to buy more kaldness media :P
