Hi,

Does anyone here have experience shipping goldfish by Fedex overnight? The Fedex rules state that they do not accept live animals for shipment except for preapproved business to businness transactions. Is there a way around this? Any suggestions?

thanks,

Rob

My experience is thqat you have to have a signed agreement to ship live fish. I have called, I have tried to ship through work and each time they have rejected me as they do not ship live animals without a live animal account.:badidea::exact:

I would not recommend ship live GFs with Fedex since it's going to be a big package.

I had shipped two huge discus by Fedex. Both fish end up dead at arrival. Both bags were dry without any water.

I double/triple bagged the fish with newspaper outside of the first bag prevent bag leak.

Delta Dash is a better/secure way of ship goldfish.

I am sorry to say the post office is still the best , Priority mail is terrible, over night really means 2 or 3 days.:exact:

Thanks for the advice.

I guess I will try Express Mail and have recipient pick the fish up at the P.O.

Cheers,

Rob

I've used Express Mail several times and never had a problem.

Whats wrong with UPS? I use them all the time for everything. They pay insurance claims, unlike Fedex. Fedex will take all the money you want to give them for insurance, but their fine print says $500 is the limit of coverage. Well..... then why did you accept my payment for $3000 in coverage, I ask...

Post office = scary
I've had very good luck with delta dash for very expensive fish.

I ship USPS priority all the time with 100% success (knock on wood).

You just have to package the fish for the appropriate trip and not label them as goldfish.

I wouldn't trust big expensive fish to USPS priority, but have gotten everything from inverts to apistos that way without an issue. Every package I've ever gotten from Ken has been Fedex, and I've never had an issue. UPS is also very reliable in my experience.

I think the thing to remember with ANY of the shippers, be it Fed Ex, UPS or USPS or even Delta Dash..sometime..somehow..somewhere they WILL screw up. Hard when we are expecting new finny kids and the box is lost, or punctured (BTDT) or in some other way damaged and jepardizes or can kill the new fish.

USPS is fine with shipping live fish and I have had good results with them but ONLY if the shipment is labeled as live goldfish, in large clear letters (pictures are good too!). I make sure to put big red arrows on every side of the box pointing to the side that should be UP.

USPS actually has a bit in their regulations manual that deals with shipping fish. So for best results, add to the box a label that reads:

PERISHABLE
Small Cold-Blooded Animals
DMM CO22.3.2

The DMM number will refer them to the regulations manual where it states their rules on how to ship live fish properly. The "PERISHABLE" should be in red 22 point type, as per their rules. This way, if any employee questions it, they can simply refer to the manual and send the fish on their way.

Hi Iris

That DMM is no longer valid, they've switched up the code. I've been trying to find the new code but have sort of given up. The problem is technically the Post office does not ship fish on planes because they are all run by FedEx and that gets into their no fish policy (unless certified).

If you Use those codes and the determine it's fish they go by truck and if thats across the country it's a long week waiting for a box of fish to show up. If done right they'll be alive but hungry.

My new policy with the post office is don't label anything and when they say "Any thing liquid perishable or hazardous?" I say yes, which automatically puts a questioning look on their face because of the hazardous part.

If questioned I tell them it's ok according to the the DMM CO22.3.3 and they are packaged to specifications. Once they get to know you they start asking "More fishies, are these cute ones or ugly ones?"
