It is almost always her or Larry&Pat Christionson that will either be Grand or Reserve Champion. I have been studying Valeries fish for about a decade. My guess is she keeps them in big space and heated in the indoor months. At the Cleveland shows, years ago, her Bristols were huge. Some of the swap fish could win this year, with a little attention to sunlight and water temperature. I would suggest that you pick your winners now, give them 50 gallons of water each, raise outside in bright sunlight with algae on the walls and at 80F. You can mix veils and Bristols in a 300 gallon rubbermaid. Cover it with hardware cloth, put in two 300 watt heaters, 35% water change weekly, feed twice a day minimum. Before the show, you must transition to indoors!

Why is it important to bring them indoors before you show a goldfish?

Two things, clean out their guts, typically full of alagae and it is unsightly in the show tanks and the fins are invariably frayed if they are outside horsing around.:youtellme:

Is there an issue with water temps if they are kept at 80 degrees when brought to a show?? I know Portlands water even in July isn't necessarily warm!! I was there a few years ago and there was comments being made on how cold the water was for the fish compared to what they were used to because the temps that weekend were far from warm.

The less shock the fish go through, the happier they will look for the judges. The Portland show is always the last weekend of July. It is common for my outside fancy fish to spawn the week of the show because their water temp finally got close to 70F (because air temp was 102F). My pond is usually within 3 degrees of my tap water. When they fill the tanks in Portland the water will probably be about 65F and will warm up some indoors if the weather is hot. If your fish is acclimated to 80, then it will probably lay on the bottom like the vendor fish.

Gary,
Thanks for the information I will set it up the crazy thing is trying to pick the fish for the show LOL I wish you lived closer to me!!!:worship::worship::worship:

Hey Norm,
They actually bought heaters for all the aquariums last year so we didnt have too much problems with the floaters and sinkers due to heat like we used to.

The AGA champions pick was fun. We had never had a GC and although it didnt win at least we had one in the running which Lari and I are proud of. Also had an AGA winner this year which was fun too.

You could take and post pics of 10 -20 fish and we could suggest which ones might get the select treatment.

Is there anyone here who has not yet joined the American Goldfish Association ?? If so, you did not receive your copy of the 85-page revised US Goldfish Standards. Well worth the price of admission.

Same here, Dan. I think they may be backed up or something though, I sent in a check well over a month ago and just got my welcome email 2 days ago. So perhaps they are trying to catch up.

i have gone to the Northwest Koi and Goldfish Association's show for 3 years
my guess is that you would have to take them inside because you have to starve them for 5 days before the show so they don't dirty the water so fast:youtellme:
they had it indoors at the indiana state fairgrounds the first 2 years, and this year they had it for free in Fishers, IN
it was awful
some of the vendor fish were dying in their tanks from the heat cause the vendors were in a greenhouse
there weren't as many fish in the show or as many vendors and i bet the show will die if they have it there again next year
