Welcome to the board! This forum has people that have forgotten more about goldfish than I've learned in the last couple of years.

probably one of the biggest mistakes made in keeping goldfish is the "goldfish bowl" mentality. Goldfish really need a lot more water than a bowl. There are "rules" that are used. 10 gallons per fancy goldfish. That would be like ranchus, orandas, black moors. The are slower moving fish. Fish like comets (common goldfish..can be feeder fish or a LOT more!) or shubunkins they recommend 20 gallons per fish (straight tailed faster moving).

Filtration is recommended to be 10x the size of the tank. Goldfish are very dirty fish as far as waste is concerned. So a 10 gallon tank for 1 fish needs a filter system for 100 gallons.

Because a goldie is a messy fish it is also often recommended that the tank bottom be bare or minimal coverage. Water changes at least weekly and if there is anything on the bottom of the tank using some kind of cleaning siphon to get the gunk out off the bottom is recommended. At LEAST a 10% water change, 25% is better, more doesn't hurt if it's not all done at one time.

Bare bones about keeping goldies. Some I may not have totally accurate..but I think most of it is pretty close at least.
