I am from Singapore. I have 2 projects that I am/would hope to be working on.

1. Tri-colour oranda
2. Crown pearlscale and pearlscale variations

Why tri-colour oranda? Because it is almost impossible to find them and especially to retain the black colour.

Why, crown pearlscale? Because it is almost impossible to find a decent crown pearlscale in Singapore.

Variations of pearlscale would include:
a) long tail/fins tikus
b) short tail/fins crown pearlscale
c) huge "turban" crown pearlscale
d) telescope eyes crown pearlscale (havn't seen one before)
e) dorsaless long tail/fins crown pearlscale (havn't seen one before)

Hi Gary,

I have not seen many stickers or notes on your tanks and tubs. I wonder how you keep track of all these. Do you keep a log on your computer or something like that? Great long list!!!:s_wow::Man:

Gary, What is your primary goal with this cross? A pearlscale with a straight edged caudal? A veiltail with pearlscales? This interestests me. I like a person who thinks outside the box.

Hi Gary,

I see that the first on your list is Philadelphia Veiltails and I'm hoping to get a Philly veiltail line going for some time. Unfortunately, I have only males (see album). I hope you can keep some fry for me (and a female if you have one to spare).

I use colored electrical tape from Home Depot, usually yellow or orange and write on it with a sharpie. When in a hurry I write right on the glass. Trouble with post it notes is my grand kids collect them. I usually do good with the notes until I start spreading them out:exact:

I have not tried this type of outcross but I believe some offsprings may turn out to look like in the following video:

Thank you Gerard for the video. I do like that fish very much, though there is no hint of pearling on the scales. Very nice overall style. Is this a fish you own?

OK, Gerard, went back to view the video again. I see it must be from an asian site you viewed. Not a fish you own. Thanks again for sharing.

It's not my fish.:exact:

From my limited knowledge of genetics, I think only a few offsprings of F1 may show some pearling and most of them will show normal (matt or metallic) scales. I read somewhere that pearling is incompletely penetrant.

Offsprings with pearling can be culled out in F1 or later generations (if you wish so).

I tend to think in terms of size versus age. I guess 5 months is not that old, they are already 3-4 months.

Thanks.

BING! You have picked three crosses that have not yet happened, traveling season for me, if they don't spawn on a weekend, I miss them. I am still hopeful.

Great fish in your album, harzan!

Are your BEP offsprings from the original 18 from Hong Kong? Or are they your own development? I know that Jim Fleeker succeeded in developing his own line of BEP.

OK, You've saved the best for the last : ) Would love to see photos of "parents" and your comments on why you chose these crosses. If you wanted to share fry, I might want some. Keep me posted.:coffee:

Gerard,

Thanks, I wish they were my invention or my own version. I imported them from Japan last year...about 20 of them, 40 total. I had a mean case of some sort of slime. I have three blues left and 3 reds.

Had very small spawns and hope to have more this year.

Hi Harris,

Sorry to hear about your BEP! Luckily you still have a pair in the remaining 3.

You have many really nice goldfish!

I have not been able to get the spawn I wanted from my gorgeous female Philadelphia veiltails and the Philly x Streamson Chua males despite all my efforts. Very disappointing.
Then something unexpected happened. My nine month old veiltails from Streamson's line were chasing. And it was a perfect cross! The males were pinky calicos and the females were dark orange calicos with black. I was not expecting this, so I lost a number of eggs to "snacking." But, I was able to retrieve about 150 eggs.
The eggs are now in a ten gallon tank with an air stone. I sure hope they hatch! The parents are siblings; not the cross I would have selected as my first choice. But sometimes one has to seize the opportunity you are handed.

Happy Easter to everyone! Well at one week of age, it looks like I have 50-60 vigorous fry. I leave for agility dog shows in Buffalo this week; I pray my husband can handle the brine shrimp hatching and multiple meal feeding routine, etc. I am hopeful some good veiltails and broadtails will result--including calicos.

Any update on the spawn?

Veil Gal
04-21-2009, 12:00 AM
Well, the fry survived "mama" being away at the dog agility shows this past week. My husband hatched and fed live baby brine shrimp for them. (I'm thinking he and Jane Hater might have a lot to talk about....) But no water changes, and he didn't turn on the light in the aquarium. Which means the temperature was lower. So, the fry didn't seem to grow at all. But none died! The fish are still small but when viewed from above I can see double tails on many of the fry. Nothing else of note to report at this point-- But I will definitely keep you posted. Thanks for asking!

04-21-2009, 03:04 AM
Well, the main thing is that the fry survived and are now in good hands. They will surely grow fast as from now.

I'm waiting for a Veiltail/fantail spawn (no female veil) but nothing yet.

Now that winter is setting in, breeding season 2009 is over for me in Montreal. I only succeeded in adding a few BEP fry to my previous group. My Bristols spawned twice but I kept no fry and even almost lost my entire group. Also got a small spawn of my Naitoh ranchus but culled all fry.

SO, I'm thinking of my project for 2010:

1- Breeding Blue egg phoenixes is an absolute must;
2- Breeding Veiltails, I have no other choice than out-crossing my Philly veils to the chinese calico veils I bought at BS (if there are females among them)
3- Bristol shubunkins, from the ones I have left
4- Breeding my Naitoh Ranchus

I'll take any other spawn from the other gf varieties I have, i.e. Doug's moors, Harris' Shukins, Blue ranchus and Monden ranchus.

Oh, I need to get some Tosas from Ted in 2010.

What are your projects?

here, trying to breed only the best of best in every batch of my orandas.

first time with them. I already bred a first batch but didnt cull first week. I´m paying the error. anyway thanks to cincy ranchu and bekko for helping me all the time with my questions.

next time, I´ll cull first week and ready to do that.

the female...I know she is not the best

my result: fry. in spite of the parents are so good they have produced some decent young orandas. 5 weeks old fry. the best 15 of 700.
