View Full Version : People searching for a goldfish forum

When I google "Goldfish Forum" it takes me 4 pages to see this website. Most of the other websites seem to be forum sites on sites selling fish that host their own small forum with no real activity (I only checked a few.)

Is there a way to get this closer to the top of the search? Or do people simply have to use it more?

Just a thought, I am impressed with the topics I have seen discussed here and the people I see who are members here and I think this is probably the best forum site for goldfishkeepers.

I personally think it's a good thing we have a low profile.

If we get to many what should I name my fish types this site will just become like all the others. There are dozens of forums for beginners, I for one think we should try to keep this one limited to more advanced subjects and participants...

To have your web page on the first page of google is a big dream for every web site owner. It is not easy though. It is totall depend on the age of the site, relevant keyword and so many other factors. We hope we can attract mid/beginner level keepers and upgrade them to become breeders(if they want to become one). :)

David, it may be inevitable that this forum becomes much like all the rest. Democracy and courtesy at work.

You may be right, I hope this site grows for fred.
But you will always have those who want to be a boss or a know-it-all even after they have only been keeping fish for a very short time.
But that is Democracy at work just hope we all can get along.

Not to sound snobbish, but I tend to agree with Dave. Beginners are one thing, but it seems that when the balance of members shifts towards an exceedingly young crowd, it tends to lead to the death of smaller forums like this... At least for me, thats why by the time goldfishparadise was down I had already stopped checking for months.

Attracting mid- or beginner-level enthusiasts with thoughtful questions is a very good thing. However, when the volume of indolent chit-chat starts to overwhelm everything else it will be time to move on.

Well said Steve. This list has something special that is not anywhere else on the net right now.

I have nothing against new comers, we were all one at one time and I enjoy it greatly when a new hobbyist is born. I was just saying we should keep our profile lower so those who are willing to search around will find us and the rest will find Aquapuppies or Kokos and will get great suggestions for names of their new fish.

I did not consider these issues that people have brought up. From the sound of things, I'm glad I didn't find another goldfish forum! Inane chit chat does fill a more than significant portion on a forum I do like to frequent for my other types of fish.

Steve,
I agree w/ you. But one of our mission is to promote goldfish keeping hobby and we will make sure this board is not filling w/ non-sense chit-chat.
I guess if we do not promote chitchat behavior by letting the treat sink, people who are not serious will disappear in the long run. What do you think? All of your inputs are welcome!!! :yess:

All of the previous pages have failed largely due to two things;

boring simplicity for beginners taht should be handled by private notes.
and- rude hostile behavior by peole that saw forums like ____ Gold and others as a means tovargue a point.

Life is short, "breeding and raising goldfish is a passion, not a connect the dots hobby". In order for a page to survive we need to be fair, but critical; informative, but not too simple or amatuerist, and most of all dedicated to having more fun than work & frustration in this complex hobby. " Always strive to move forwards!

Fred, would you agree that the chit-chat at RG is somehow kept to a dull roar and does not seem to overwhelm? I'm not sure why and, perhaps, it's just my imagination.

One distinct difference in the Singapore boards and the US boards is the response when someone posts photos of their new fish. In Singapore you get a frank, but polite, critique of the good points and bad points. In the US you get several pages about how cute it is, but a honest critique is neither expected nor welcome.

There is another Singapore board (AF) where you get both the critique and several pages of "cute one".

Funny how every forum has its own micro-culture.

Steve,
I agree w/ you. RG is a good model for good goldfish forum. I guess we have to start our own style too. Instead of saying 'Cute one' we should say 'Cute pet grade'??

I would like to know is there any forum on this board you would like removed or replaced?

Maybe adding a forum titled "Idle Chit Chat" would serve as a warning for both sides. Honesty in advertising. If this thread continues much longer it may get downgraded to the dreaded chit chat list. Norm

There is nothing we need to delete. Just doesn't want the forum to skew toward one side. We should stay in the middle. :coffee:

Just wanted to see what directions everyone wanted the board to go.

I think we've got the bases covered as far as categories go. Maybe if we find a few that are rarely used we can simplify by combining similar categories into one.

Adding to many categories tends to bury the content and make it difficult to find.

I'm new here and what i would consider a mid to lower level experience enthusiast. There are two points of view that could conflict, there are your advanced hobbyists who want to exchange ideas, knowledge etc. Then there are you entry level to mid range hobbyists who are looking for advice and tips from those who have either learned the hard way or accumulated knowledge from years of observation, study and keeping of fish. Eventually there are bound to be those who post silly content not entirely related to the hobby, you can become a victim of your own success as they say.

If this forum wants to discourage those who come for idle talk and "help me name my fish posts" then there are ways to do so. I would simply propose that you do not throw those that ask what many would consider remedial questions about the hobby out with the undesirables. Even though I have experience from working in the aquarium and fish industry I found that much of what I had been taught didn't apply in all areas or was completely wrong. After all promoting the hobby of gold fish keeping benefits us all in the long run. Just my humble opinion.

I must admit that I do like this forum of experience individuals better then some of the others I visit. I do get tired of the post of please name my fish but I guess I am at the stage of the game where I want to really excel at goldfish keeping. However I want this forum to flourish and if that means some more post like please name my fish, I guess then it is worth it if it ensures the success of this site

The name my fish can get annoying pretty quickly, but I like helping beginners learn how to care for their fish. I do not mind beginners with GF bowls coming to learn why their fish are dying, There is lots to learn and it takes awhile. Some websites I don't visit much can be too hostile to newbs, I find.
