I know its tomorrow, but the lil red envelopes started showing up today. To those who get em, what are you gonna spend yours on this year? I bet at least some of you are sending that money straight to Paul, or Ken, or Tommy lol.

Guys, tell us about the red envelopes? I'm assuming this is a tradition.

All I know is that the red envelopes = money! A Chinese New Year tradition where older family/friend members give younger members money in red packets. Other Asian countries follow the same tradition (I know South Koreans do this too.)

Jed,
Red envelope is a pocket money which married people(adult) has to give to young/unmarried person in family during new year time. You have to put money in red envelopes and distribute envelopes in the family. (sort of Christmas gift idea in Chinese)
Red envelopes are also used in other situation like wedding. For detail, please take a look in here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_envelope).
Thanks for the info, Fred. Happy New Year to you all!

Wishing everyone a prosperous and happy New Year! Hope the year of the Ox will be a better than the last. My kids have been gorging on candy and other sweets all day (I let my two younger ones stay home from school) and yes, they got their red envelops this morning.
