Does anyone have any idea if there is any difference between a white wen and a red wen's growth characteristics? Just curious if there is any correlation between color and development?
Thanks,
Chris

This is a good question and I have wondered the same thing. I have seen good wen development on both red and white headed fish, but it seems like the red heads do grow a bit more than the white ones. This may depend on the strain though.

My Japanese Sensai maintains that red wen develops best. White, as in snow white, is the worst. White, as in yellowish white, is OK but not as good as red. Fish with show white wen are seldom used as breeders - even if they do actually develop decent hoods.

Thats seems to be the case, but I will admit I love snow white hoods with red eye line....

almost all of my good bodied fish have white wens, not sure if they'd be considered snow white or jade, but definitely not red......they are starting to come in but compared to other photos of young ranchus the white seems to be coming on slower.

I think the general consensus is that white wen tends to be less developed. Of course there'll be exceptions to the rule, but that is not the norm.

John, I can't help but wonder if some of the adversion to white is the tradition of showing in white bowls? It would stand to reason that a red or primarily red fish would show better?
Thanks,
Chris

I can see where you're coming from Chris, but no, this is not the case, indeed in Jinch Kai (Japan) and I think at the All Japan show too, black bowls are used during the judging process so that white fish can be appreciated. Having said that all-white fish are seldom held in high regard but give the same fish red lips, red fins and red "thumb prints" on the tail and it can make Champion -East Ozeki. I find snow white wens on red fish extremely attractive, certainly far more attractive than the same fish will a yellowy white wen but my Sensai is adamant - show it yes - but don't breed from it: the same applies to pale orange/yellow fish.
