There are some nice fish there Harris. I've come unstuck this year with a calico Oranda x calico Veiltail cross. Huge spawning, now culling but have yet to find a fry with a divided tail. Also, at least 50% of the fry are singletails.

Gary, Fry are not as promising as I hoped. No hand spawns as they start too early. The out come varies significantly. I have a couple of younger ones that I need to wait on.
John, I a similar thing happen to me too. Cross had only a few with splits and the splits came after the fish were 1.5 to 2 inches. Shukin crosses from last year, 2 fish I kept with fused tails....started to split after 1 year!???
Are you trying to get one of these in Calico?

I took it off the UK website...I think BEAUT!

Very nice, Harris. I like their long body and slim profile.

I am working on my 2nd batch right now. So far, I have around 400 babies with dorsal fin and splitting tail. Tail are spreading, so i don't know what to look for to cull out to reduce the quantity. The 1st batch are easier for me to culled since I most doesn't not really have a split tail and not spreading. Some already turning color. I'll see if i can get the picture/video or not.
Thinking to take these to BS........

Difficult to judge them Dan for, as far as I know, there are no standards for them in the West and there are differences between calico Orandas (generally accepted as "Chinese") and Azumas. At a glance I guess one could say that the bodies look a little on the long side BUT in reality the bodies should be long. My understanding is that the tails should be long also with show Oya in Japan having 8 inch bodies and 8 inch tails therefore I guess their tails are a little short and I noticed some had folds in the tail too.
Ideally heads should be red and bodies blue with black peppering. Not sure whether black streaks in the finnage is desirable or "allowable". I like the fish and would love to have them here in the UK. Azumas are on the slide in popularity in Japan as they need too much space and that space is more profitable if given over to Ranchu, Jikin or Tosakin. Hopefully Harris (I know you will read this Harris) will take these fish seriously and give them loads of space. Perhaps if WE ALL nag Harris into finding new homes for his blues, egg fish and now calico Nankin, all the water can be given over to these eye-catching Azumas.

I hear yea, just trying to stimulate discussion........
I agree, I actually prefer the r/w version of the Japanese nagate oranda, but I can't get them. I would like to see a med length body with stronger wider peduncle/back... I have the metallic culls from these azumas though. Maybe do a ranchu cross? Most likely not, as space is a premium and I need to concentrate on ranchu...

Yes, Harris, that fish in calico. The metallic might actually be one of mine taken a couple of years ago or it might belong to a friend - Andy Barton. Either way it is British bred, not an import. Thanks for the tip re split tails. I will keep a few just in case although unfortunately most of the tails seem to be "double fused" along the top ray - I won't keep any of those!
John
P.S. Which web site did you get it from? Might help me trace parentage.

John, I cannot remember, but these UK sites are not the easiest to get back to, for anyways.
These Azumas were a real disappointment for me on the 1st 2 spawns. The later ones look like they may be better...it may also be my high hopes since Paul says his are better and they look a lot better than mine. I have had tons of spikes on the 1st 2 spawns and partial dorsals.
If the later batches do not look better, I will get a new group and start again...I probably will anyways.
I am moving to a lake front property and will grow some out in the lake. They might get bigger with all the Bass chasing them for additional exercise...:)

I would go slow on judging the adults for fry quality. In facyt I would wait until the next breeding season to judge
harzan
07-23-2010, 12:55 AM
May be so. But I will not forget the rate of culls! Two large spawns. 2nd cull looking at side view, close to 70% have spikes, partial or no dorsals??? 3rd and 4th spawns seem a lot better. I get up too late to see who is breeding. When I have more space, I should break up into 3 breeding tanks.

Gary,
I would love to see update on them. Probably you can promote their color better than me. Since I do not have backyard which sunlight are needed for its color.

Hey Harris,
Thanks for posting the update. It is interesting to see how they differ from ordinary orandas. The bodies are definitely longer, and the headgrowth is more moderate...sort of like ranchu.
Cheers,
Rob

Hey Rob, Yes...I too find the head growth interesting to watch. Some have longer heads. I thought looked deformed earlier, but am thinking they just might have the longer ranchu like heads.

They are very fun fish to work with! No matter what you do or don't do, they still live! Growing fast and they're look very promising!
By now, I believe you can tell the different between the 1st batch and 2nd batch. Do you think the same as me that 2nd batch are way much better in quality, Gary? And how the fish we put in outside pone of yours doing? I love to see the update of them. Success in blueness?
Thx Hondataeg6 for your kind of words!

What is the standard for Azumanishiki?
I think whatever look pleased to our eyes, considered a good fish!
For real standard, I have no idea. The standard I use is keep the good fish that pleasing my eyes.....>:)
Great conformation, but you shouldn't see sakura coloring in a calico spawn. I suspect there is TVR blood in there (to improve the conformation). It might take awhile to get significant/permanent black and blue colors back.
I know they have TVR bloodline running in there, but I think these bloodline I stock is very stable. The only question I have is how to bring out those color. I did some experiment on them. Lot of light, Saki Red, give some to Gary's Outdoor pond, and dark water(dirty), warm water, cold water, and etc.
Here are some from one of my tubs that I believe I successfully bring out their color. Need to age little more to get more deep color. Try to watch them in 720p;

I can see some blue color development which is nice, now if you can stimulate wen growth a bit more... They all have rectangular shaped wen and that is also good.

What is the standard for Azumanishiki?
Anyone come across a standard for any form of Azuma?
I believe the ones Paul brought in are Kanto Form.

Please consider revideoing at 4" vs 4'. While the form and blue-ness appear to be good, at this range there is not enough detail

Look at the decscription of a bristol shunkin and you have an ideal Azu...
bigbettadan
10-04-2011, 04:54 PM
Marking wise you want a calico fish, but red heads are most prized. Conformationwise you have a ranchu head, long body, basically a longfin version of a ranchu tail.... And big. Japanese azumas are supposed to get huge.

if a translated one is found, please share here one day. I know there are at least a couple different styles of Azuma.
Thanks
