Hello I have recently purchased 2 Calico Orandas. I have been feeding 3 times daily for grooming. One of my oranda now keeps floating up or upsidedown. PLease what can I do to help him! :youtellme:

What type of food did you use?

Starve for a few days then feed green peas (without shell) only. It doesn't look like you can feed this fish heavily as it probably has swimbladder issue.

Use tiny pellets or gel food or frozen bloodworms next. These are easier on the stomach.

I used tetra food for goldfish. Is this an issue that can reoccur?

Unfortunately, yes. Fish that does this will always have a tendency to do it again, and this means you probably won't be able to groom them to the full potential.

This is also one of the reasons why I'm now into topview ranchu only. They don't get SBD easily compared to other fat-bodied type, somehow, I think shallow water also helps. It becomes stressful, instead of relaxing watching your fish struggle to swim.

Starving should help, once they poop that should ease up constipation and lessen SBD issue. One thing that might induce poop is large water change...but make sure the temperature of new water is the same as the one in tank.

Well I did not feed for an entire afternoon and today he pooped and is now swimming okay and not floating. I must find a diet for him. Is Hikari Oranda Gold goof for fishes with this syndrome? Or Peas and Brine shrimp the only way?

I would use heavy food (pellets) in AM, and lighter food (live/frozen food, gel food, veggies, peas) at noon, and in the evening try pellets again if they don't float--If they float then I'd go back to lighter food for supper.

Frequent feedings in smaller portions, I think, helps in a number of ways. It stimulates fish to swim around looking for food often, instead of becoming a couch potato--exercise is always good. You see them active more often which is a pleasure to the eyes. Fish with floating issues also tend to do better since there's less chance of constipation.

I like tiny pellets such as Saki Hiraki which is a sinking version. The Hikari lionhead/oranda is quite a bit bigger, but if you can soak for 5-10 minutes first that might help.
