We decided to get a tvr and this male caught our eye from xxxxxxxxxxxx. Paul gratiously donated it to the Louisville Koi and Goldfish Society for their auction so they benefitted from it and we saved some money getting started in TVR's. Thanx Paul. Will add females as we go and $ are there. I think this one is a good starter for us. I don't know the bloodline.

It's a good start..
Good head and tail.
Issue: Peduncle is too long and thin.

Looks like an excellent starter fish Bruce. When selecting a female try to find one which has a short thick peduncle - don't worry if it lacks head. Also if this male has any deficiencies from the side view try to find a female which counteracts those deficiencies.

Agreed, nice start! I pretty much echo everyone else's sentiments. A female with a wide peduncle and less space between the belly and tail shoulder.

It's a very good fish--show grade, imo--just too skinny. Bulk it up and you'll see the full potential--one month of intensive feedings should do it. Peduncle might become shorter if the belly expands southward.

My Sugi (your fish's sibling) when I got him.

After powerfeeding. Note the width of the belly compared to the wen. You can do this easily judging from what you did with your oranda.

HI Bruce,
Like I told you at the show, the fish need foods. Just heavy feed them for a month. And you'll see what you got! I just can't keep up with feeding to all my fish...
It's a good fish even for the hardcore keeper!

These guys can eat a ton of food and remain robust. Mine feels like a solid chunk of meat every time I pick him up during water change--virtually no soft part except at the wen.

P'Suphi,
Try less water change and more feeding, but watch out for water quality by adding more power filter. Aged water might do the trick! I am currently working on 5-6 TVR now on fatting them up.

Problem is, the shows will be over in less than a month and Im not sure he will fill out in that amount of time... oh well, there's next year. :) Maybe he will make some pretty babies over the winter. :)

Take care with the "stuffin'" Bruce if your main objective is to breed from him. Breeding boys are best kept lean and active.

He died!
I noticed he didnt go for his food yesterday morning. Went down to check on him several hours later and we wasnt swimming around. I went back to working outside and about3pm I went back to check on him and he was dead. I checked his gills and they were very pale and his slime coat seemed heavy. I didnt scope, just bagged him and stuck him in the freezer. One thing struck me as odd. When I went down there he looked like he was swimming a few inches under the surface, level, like he was alive; wasnt upside down or on his side or anything. I, for an instant though he was alive. Not sure Ive ever had a fish do that before.
Oh well, TVR's someday.... maybe. Or maybe we'll stick to breeding orandas, tosakin, veils, an occasional ryukin, pearlies, and now possibly chochokin. :)

Someone should give him some of your babies. We need more ranchu breeders.:exact:
I think that larger/older fish do take bigger hit from shipment. From my past experiences, they always sulk for several days and they get infection--breakout easily. Smaller/younger ones usually swims normally right away. Having said that, I still prefer to buy larger fish since I know exactly what I'm getting.

One thing about TVR, is they're quite delicate! I do take my time for fish to rest and only treated with salt. After a week, then i followed up with light ProfromC and then prazipro. I haven't feed them for almost 2 weeks after the show.
The first time i have imported TVR was in 2007. Only couple pieces, say 5 pieces. All of them are dead after 2 weeks. Most problem I've face with TVR are either gill infection or gill-flukes. Like in your case, It sound more like gill fluke where fish died in good shape, ie. no floating or sinking but look like it's still alive.
No matter how good you are about handling fish. Most of the time when you first start touching TVR, You may kill the first one.
Anyways...I feel sorry for your lost, Bruce! Maybe if you want to give it a try again, I have babies. I'll bring them to Chicago so come in to select! I planning to bring the whole spawned, but all depending on other fish I'm bringing!

I dont feel as guilty now reading your post paul. I had the same problem that bruce described with my lil black guy. I found him this morning kinda hovering at the bottom when i walked by n he didnt move i got conserned n got the net out and sure enough he was gone. ge had been acting a lil off for a couple days now and hardly ate at all yesterday. :( i was really excited about getting started with Ranchus too. :(
