What is the approx. adult body size of veils? Ive never seen a large (like a ryukin) one so Im wondering if they are naturally a much smaller fish.

Ive heard differing opinions...like 4-5", mine are still growing and some have bodies are bout 4" in length. I have see pictures of what seem to be larger fish, but pix are always hard to tell....I have seen one freakish white one that was HUGE like maybe 8" body!

I would say 6 is good, keep in mind, their caudals are very long, so total length will be high...

Yea that thing is freakish, but very cool...would be interesting to see if he could breed it and see if the size carries on in some of the offspring:exact:
any plans Gary?

When you say Gary's white one is 12 inches are you including tail or is that nose to caudal perduncle? Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig difference... lol Personally, I prefer NOT to include tail length when measuring.

I should say over 12 inches, and I was including tail.

I guess we should mention the lenght of tail when we talk about veil since tail is the important characteristic of veil. Should use body:tail method (for example 6:6 is saying 6" body and 6" tail). my two cents

yea, body/fin ratio. Especially on things like dorsal height to body depth...

I like the idea alot. We could use 6:6 for body length:Fin length and 6/6 for body depth / dorsal Height.

Here at least (UK) we measure fish from snout to end of peduncle which is probably the best way of doing it to achieve fair comparisons. Length of tail is largely ignored as tail seldom extends in a straight line from the end of the peduncle - the Veiltail is a good example, it droops! A Veiltail will grow as large as you want it to grow as long as you "put the effort in" and there is no reason why certainly 6 - 8 inch bodies cannot be obtained but would you really want such giants? Size isn't everything and personally for a Veiltail I consider a 4 inch body is as big as I want to go. Above that there is a tendency for fish to be lethargic spending most of their time resting with their tails dragging on the bottom of their tank facilitating damage and bacterial infection. Also, there is a tendency for colour to fade on large fish so do you really want an emormous colourless lump resting on the bottom of your tank or a sprightly colourful 3 inch specimen?

John brings up a good point. I see too much emphasis on size in general at US shows IMO..........

Agree, it makes people feel the bigger the better.

The thread topic was NOT about what some people think SHOULD be. I was asking what IS the average sized adult because I hadnt seen any large ones. I didnt indicate a PREFERENCE at all. Start a thread on preference if you want to discuss it. Thank you to those that attempted to answer my question.

Bruce, you're getting just a trifle "ratty"; specifically there is no answer to your question - there is not an "average size" for an adult goldfish of any variety. They will be as large or as small as you care to make them. Veiltails will certainly breed at 2 inch body length (making them adult in my book) and 6-8 inch bodies are attainable so if you want an average I guess its any figure in between. My Veils stop growing at around 4 inch body length but then I don't want them any larger.

Total length maximum is 10" to 12" for Veils that are 4yrs. My monster Male white on white calico was born in 08'
Most veils max out at 10" TL, and body only at six to seven. I am no convinced that this is the maximum length. These fish are capable of getting very large in a pond and held at 80F in a 125gallon in the winter. Body length is typically 7" maximum. The trick with this fish is to build it completely by year three. Moving to a large pond has a dramatic effect on there vigor. Sad to say most veils never leave a glass tank.

What the heck is white on white calico??? Is that likethe Snow White in a snow storm jigsaw puzzle?
Thanx for the info. I have room in a 600 gal outside tank/pond for a few. Just need to find a few showable ones. Then I'll try breeding them.
