Hi Veil Guru,
What is the water change process in Veil world? I am worrying about damaging their fins, assuming I am doing 100% water change. Thank you.

You need to move the fish into a holding tank with some aeration. If you let them flop around in the bottom of the tank, the fins will get splits.

Aeration is necessary in the holding tank - maybe just a 5 gallon bucket. Scoop the fish out with your hands - no nets.

Just do a 50% water change and forget the 100%, growing fish in bacteria free water will make them weak.... Drain 50%, and fill back up? Twcie a week should be fine, always watch for redness in the tail fins, this is a great water quality indicator:exact:

Dr. Gene Lucas, one of truly greats of the aquarium hobby, told me the same thing. Looking back, I agree. While I made great show bettas doing 100% daily water changes, it made the lines much weaker. Something to think about.

What is the best practice to do 50 percent water change? I guess I should take fish out during the process. Temperature is becoming an issue here. I don't have extra tank for water storage.

Fred, how much water are you talking about?
How many gallons in the whole thing?

I don't like handling/moving fish, unless I have to.

Adding the new water very slowly, is the same as acclimating.

90 g in total. So I am changing 45g at a time.

Have you checked to see how stable your water is?
Our city water comes out of the tap at around 9pH.
It takes a good four days of heavy aeration, and it drops to a rock solid 8pH and stays there.
Our well water is the opposite.
Personally, I think a lot of bad press on water changes has to do with the fact that the "water" changes.

Do you have room for a garbage can? Home Depot and Lowes sells a very solid big can.

What I would do is siphon out the 50%.
Check your pH and temp of the new water, be sure they match, then add it back slowly.

I have issue with boiler. When I put the new water in, tap water temperature match the tank temperature(Lets say 75F). After a while(after filling for 50 g), tap temperature drop all in a sudden to 65. I have to adjust the temperature again at the tap to reach 75. By the time, water in the tank is already at 70 which is 5 degree different from original one. What can I do?

I am fine with PH. Unfortunately I don't have extra space for additional water storage.

Fred,

How long have you keep goldfish? What kind of goldfish do keep at your place?
Your question is kinda silly, you know that?

First of all, I have keep ranchu of most of the time. I don't need to worry about dorsal fin. For veil, I need to worry about dorsal fin. I am still learning at the end.

Amen! :)

Seriously Fred, I don't think that a strick regimine needs to be followed, just common sense good practices. Regular changes, semi-close temp match, declor, clean tank and filter, and that should be all ya need to raise nice veils or anything.
