Well, I am starting a line of Veils. So I guess I need to join the group officially. My ranchus will always be number 1, but I a) like veils b) my girlfriends' son really likes them and we can do them together c) I have lots of empty tanks...LOL Well if John Parker can do it so can I.... Anyway, I am going to Garys to get seed stock tomorrow...

Very well. Right now they are Tub coloring out for a few weeks. I really like these blue philly crosses. They remind me of the UK veils in type. I will take some video soon for you.
Thanks

Do veil tail have short body with a hump like a ryukin? I see some with a hump and some without.

Ideally no they shouldnt have a hump or wen but in sometimes higher amounts of protien will get the growth of both. I have some Veils that almost have a hump due to that I have cut back the feeding a bit and the "hump" disappeared.

Dan,
What are these Hybrids? Are these Gary's blue/Purple Broadtail Ryukin cross or the Oranda outcross?
bigbettadan
08-24-2010, 09:25 PM
Yes, the veil/broadtail cross........ I kept mostly Veils with a few broadtails as well. The Head/body shape is much more in line with Veils than Ryukins. Heads are larger and they dont have humps. They are deep bodied though.

just curious, how much would a nice veil tail usually go for?

Since they are a rare/difficult breed, its really up to the few breeders that have them..... The good news is the breeders that work them are more about promoting them than profit...

Glad they are doing well for you Dan. Wish those you brought me in Indy would have survived. Hopefully we are past all that now.

Excellent. They are wintering in the garage, so they are not feeding right now. I hope to get a spawn in March or April once the temps are up. At they time of the cool down, they are about 3 inch body length. Very nice finnage. The dorsals are awesome. There are some pics of them on the thread from Freds visit to my house last Sept. But they are bigger now, and coloring, red/black. Too bad they will lose the black, very attractive.

Now Gary and Dan those are the broadtail outcross or the oranda outcross??
Sorry I already asked that.....I forgot LOL I wouls love to see a closer look....So since they were the broadtail Ryukin outcross what was the outcross Veil males to BT female or reverse?? What head type did they go twords the pointed ryukin??? and are they developing a hump??? I do like the tail spread and they look like nice fish. I am ging to do a project in the blues as well now for fun I have blue Butteflies and blue veil telescopes I am going to breed to the Thomma male.... He is a decolorized blue saddle back. I hope that by breeding him to a female I have in mind that there will be an excellent result. I am sure that it will take some time I hope by f4- f5 the color will be stable.

heads are close to Philly than ryukin, but the briadtails were not all ryukin-like either. A few of these are filling out...
