Hexamita is an internal infection cause by protozoa (single cell organism) usually affecting digestive system. It can cause white string feces, but a lot of other things can do that. I don't think it's common in goldfish (more often seen in ciclids/oscars). Treatment is metronidazole or any chemicals that kill parasitic protozoa such as copper, formalin, etc.
If your fish have fin problems, that's probably not Hexamita. A picture (of affected fish) is worth a thousand words, if you can post it.

http://www.koivet.com/a_koi_parasite_hexamita.html This isnt a pic of my fish but its symptoms are the exact same and if you look at the caudal fin you'll see what i mean about the "deteration" the tissue between the rays looks eaten away. so evidently there is an external version of the Hexamita that goldfish are suspetable too :/ http://www.koivet.com/a_koi_parasite_hexamita.html

^A lot of other conditions can also cause problems similar to that picture, which isn't specific for Hexamita infection. For example, water quality issue with ammonia or nitrite spike, or pH crash with secondary bacteria infection can cause similar picture...and much more common.
If you want to medicate then pull the trigger, don't wait.
