I need help with a treatment for one of my tosakins. One of my tosakins that I recently purchased is suffering from Gill disease. When I got her the gill plates were open. I was told that it was because she has been kept in high temperature water. I have been keeping her in a tank with supreme water quality since I got her 3 weeks ago and there is no sign of healing and now look even worse. I took a closer look at the gills and looks like the edges of the gills are not smooth and seems like some of them look torn. I put her on antibiotics that I purchased from goldfish connection. Can anyone give me advice on what kind treatment I should put her on?
Thanks
Zaw

Bacyterila gill dease is pretty curable, I would try Oxilinc Acid. From the descrip tion o f the gills I have to ask if you have scrapped for flukes?

Anyway, very clean water and some antibiotics usually cure this fairly quickly:youtellme:

Gary,
Thanks for your advice. I have not scrapped for Fluke. I dont have a scope to identify if that is fluke. How long does it usually takes to heal? Could you tell me where I can get Oxilinc Acid?

thanks

I've been working with a few of my friends fish that were having trouble breathing along with some tail rot and then add ich to this mess. I started with salt and clean water. I then went with acriflavin to see if the gill problem was bacterial. It must not be because they still had labored breathing. I am now working with Formalin and it seems to be working. This has been happening over a full week already. I ran the acriflavin for two days then Chemi-pure and water change. One day with no medication, then the last 3 with the formalin. They are looking better today and eating pretty good for me. It will still be awhile before I think they are healed, but I'm feeling pretty comfortable that they will be fine.

Sometimes it takes awhile to get sick fish back up and swimming.

Hope this helps,
George

If you suspect fluke just treat for it, before it's too late. Prazi is very benign.

I don't know of any correlation between open gills and warm temp. Gills that are wide open are typically due to either genetic defects or infections.

It has been like three weeks since I started treating my tosakins with antibiotics and clean water. The gills plates are still open  . The edges of gills still look torn. Is it possible for the gills to return to normal shape? Should I keep him on the medication longer? What else should I try?

Thanks

Ask Steve,

I hear the gill covers are a general "issue" with this variety. It may not be sick. I think if it was, it would have died by now.

Did you add salt, as well as treat for flukes?

I heard about the gill cover problem with this type of fish, I think it usually started showing in young age. The one I have is probably like 3 years old. I think the edges of gills would not look torn if it was typical problem with this type of fish. I encountered some fish with that type of defects. They seem to have gills cover plates curled and the gills filaments looks normal. I try adding salt but haven’t try Fluke treatment yet. The fish is active and eating well. Seeing him every day with open gill plates bothers me. Thanks Harris and Dan for your advice. I will try to contact Steve and see if he can give me some advice.

Thanks
