When I saw the pic below on one of the goldfish websites, I thought this variety was incredible. I am wondering what tail to look for. It does not look like a regular tail. I seem to have several with tails that are NOT well spread and are narrow/close together. Looking at the photo, it this acceptable? OR...is this photo at a favorable angle?

Any tips will be appreciated.

Thanks!

There is no standard yet for BEP. I know Russ Taylor was working on it and he would probably be the best person to give you these tips. However, taste may influence culling.

Regular back line does not seem to be a problem with BEP, almost none with spikes. I had BEP fry with straight backline and those with a curve and I keep both these 2 types. If you like the one in the picture, keep the straighter back.

There are BEPs with slimmer body and those with rounder type. Billy Tai likes the latter type, I keep both. If they are called EGG phoenix, I guess they should be rounder.

Good tail shape is hard to get and the tail is rarely symmetrical to begin with. Many show crooked tail fin on one side and should of course be culled. Tail like in the picture is just long unspread tail.

1 out of 7 or 8 has no anal fins, cull!

Some have open gill plate issue, cull!

Colorwise no problem, all fry develop into the same color. No problem with red or orange.

The BEP line we have have pointy head, no headgrowth. That's how you could distinguish them from your blue shukins.

Hope this helps!

Thanks G...

...and anyone else keeping this variety... is the tail in the picture I posted liked or is a regular split/divided tail preferred? I was wondering id the closeness if the tail is to keep is stronger??? I see very few with well divided tails.

Anyone besides Eric wanting to get some? Should be ready for BS, subject to disaster.

I'd love to get some, or blue shukin, or any other colour shukin - if at all possible.

You should just try crossing your Tsugurus with an edo...and you will have them. If Gary is not get too filled with all the Ranchu from the show, I plan to send some fish.

I'm waiting for my home-bred sakura female ranchu to spawn - 3 years old, but she never has. I kept one tsugaru male that turned out to be a nice ranchu (short-tail). None of the others were worth keeping :-(
So it looks like I got some spare water real estate.

Sabine,

Do you usually attend the BS?

We were invited, but couldn't make it last year. It's quite a long way from Northern Ontario.... but I hope we can find a way to make it this year.

Super, If Gary can handle with space, I plan to send some to share. GOOD LUCK ON THE SPAWNS THIS YEAR!

Hi Harris

I have two males from Russ. I think they are wonderful fish. I love their tails. I'll try to get some top view pictures as the picture you linked to just does not do them justice.

If any are available this year I'm looking. I'd really like to find a girl to match up with my males as they are chasing constantly.

I've heard reports that they are poor chasers so that's why I'd like to keep them together until I can find the right female.

Thanks for keeping this fish going. It is the crown jewel of our hobby.

I agree with David...... They are best appreiated from the top, like ranchu.

Just want to remind you that Billy Tai also got a reasonable spawn a few months ago and has some fry. I hope he goes to BS and bring some. Chances are good because Ted Tai moved to Ontario, Canada. They will probably drive down to to Gary's in Cincinnati. Mine have not spawned yet.
