Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could just help me out with the specifics of judging lionheads (true lionheads). I read the AGA pages but I know I can get better advice here. Had an accidental spawning and picked a random handful of eggs (space is tight), got about 20 to hatch, and I'm down to four now. They're around a month old. Thanks guys

Must be or have;

Good face and wen all around.
Must swim without tilting and when sitting.
Body must be robust and deep
must be etergetic in show bowl

and if you are competing with imports, must be large unless they have <3" class.

Last year and the MWPKS show they had a "baby" division, and its the only show near me.
Cool, theres one I'm considering in particular, wen is just coming in, and hes still pretty skinny but hes starting to eat plenty bloodworms. I didnt know about the tilting, so i'll def keep an eye out. thanks!

With good lionheads, you want as straight as back as possible(minimal curve). The best ones have completely flat back. You need a strong powerful tail to handle the huge headgrowth that lions should have. It is a bubblely growth not refined like ranchu. A longer body is also a advantage, or the fish becomes a headstander with age....... I hope you work them, good LHs are scarce.........

Cool, thanks guys. Just posting a picture of the mother, and the lionhead I'm thinking about keeping, and I'll give the other 3 away to my sister and some friends. Worth investing time & gallons?
...these tiny guys are hard to photograph haha

Actually the 2 babies have better LH body than the mother... Headgrowth is the big issue..

Yeah, i think it is from the long-body of the father, they also got his coloring.
They're just now getting big enough to eat hikari lionhead, so I'll start pushing the protein

I guess if you're planning to show this fish, you'll want more headgrowth + the longer body
personally, I think the mom is really cute, very round-looking...but then I like round fish (obviously)

Lionheads are not ment to be round fish.... And short body fish tend to struggle with swimming motion. Theres a reason the best ranchu have at least 1/3 body/head ratio.

I once had a LH with a terrific head I picked up from a local store(Iowa). Unfortunately his short body led to a headstander by the time he was an adult.
