Here is my 2 cents.
Tail is good.
Penducle is ok but you need shallow water to make it thick.
Stomach is too big.
Need Headgrowth too.
I will feed them only bloodworm and keep them in shallow water.

not more than 4" for baby.

I know that's ideal depth for better headgrowth because of less presure. But will it make a difference on the penducle???
What do you think on this CBR, well besides the penducle.

Fred, I been feeding nothing but hikari froozen blood worms. But It has been in a deeper tank. I guess I need to move it to a shallow tub before it's too late.

Chris, those are Matsuamya correct?
You did a good job with tail selection. In general, they need more width of peduncle. Gary is working on this. I think more width of head as well. This is a good start though......
On the CBR...... very thin body, peduncle, and head for this stage...

Oh, on the CBR I was referring to Antonios fish....
Chris. Keep up the good work. Those are good fish for this line..

You want to use shallow water for young ranchu...... But, genetics are still the primary factor here. You cant turn a cull into a good fish....you need the raw material.

Dan, would you call it a cull?

Thanks for being honest. I will move this ranchu to a shallow tub and continue to grow it. I hope I can learn from this one.
Chris sorry for posting in you're thread.

I think wen development is poor for fish at this stage, peduncle is pretty thin and a bit long. What I worry about the most is the gills which appear abnormally wide open, but this may also be from the bad timing when you hit the camera shutter. Try to double the feedings and see what happens in a month.
Good idea about moving fish to shallow tub, shallow water is a must if you want to develop a good TVR.

I think at this stage (BBR) you can only look at tail and back (sideview). The tails look pretty good. I'm used to seeing fish with a bit more wen growth at this size but I'm not really experienced enough. They might be a bit fat but I think baby fish having a little belly is better than underfeeding, and it's not unusual for breeders to keep em fat at this stage according to what I've seen.

Suphie, the gills are fine. I think It was the timming when I took the picture. Here's another shot:

like I said i will move it to a shallow tub and keep growing it and see what happens.

^Yeah, you might be able to salvage this fish to some degree. Look what happened to mine, didn't turn out too bad at all.

Dan asked, "Chris, those are Matsuamya correct?"
No these are not the Matsuamya, they are a cross between two lines, I was told which two but did not write it down, so unfortunately I don't recall. I have been keeping them in 11 inches of water, but will drop it down a bit.
The photo was taken pretty close to after a feeding and on a weekend. I try to feed 5-7 times on the weekend, since I can usually only get 2-3 three during the week.
The Matsuamya pair did spawn for me today! Unfortunately it must have been early morning, and by 5:30 pm the parents were filling their bellies with caviar. I hope to get at least a few viable eggs from what is left. As it has been mentioned before by Cincy Ranchu watch the moon cycle...full moon last night, major water change, little bit warmer water and eggs today. Or it was pure dumb luck.
Thanks for the feedback.

Aren't those Matsuyama X Oishi?
Good to hear on the spawn. You can usually count on female to spawn again 2 weeks after the first......
