After doing 100% water change, the sponge filter is flying all over the tub. I have to squeeze air out at least 3 times to make it stay at the bottom. How do you manage your flying sponge filter? Thanks.

Hi Fred,
It will generally settle in as water comes into it and displaces the air that remains trapped in the pores of the sponge (even after squeezing). I had this problem more with newer sponges than older ones. Since it is in a tub (plastic?), and a falling stone would not be disastrous, you could weigh it down with a medium-small stone or three.

Yes this is why we have hang on the back filters. I basically squeeze and hold tight and release rather slowly so so they suck in water and not air, occasionally I balance or large air stones or pebbles on the top to weigh them down:youtellme::thumbUp:

Fred,
I had the same problem with the big sponge filter that I put out in my 150g tank. I just put a couple of big river rocks ( you can get a very small bag of them at Walmart in the aquarium section for a dollar or so if you don't have any handy) on top of mine and it did the trick.

Use a hot glue gun to glue a ceramic tile to the bottom of the sponge filter base.

I use a bowl to transport the filter to the sink for cleaning. Afterward I fill the bowl with water and put the sponge in there with a few squeezes. Then I put the fully soaked sponge filter back in the tank...no floating issue.

Squeeze it completely submerged, should do the trick
Best wishes Billy.

sillie-cone it to a nice square piece of slate! or a rock!?? or balance rocks on top..ugh then you knock them off and they bang on the bottom...hot glue might have toxic stuff in it!??

Squeeze the sponge filter well to get all the water out before you put it in your trash and go get a REAL filter. :) ......... * I also like Steve's idea. :exact:

haha, I have a lot of real filter and just stop using them AC70, Eheim Canister. I just want to stick with 100% daily water change. :)

Hot glue is not toxic, but silicone aquarium sealer will last longer. I've heard that Gorilla Glue is non-toxic once it's cured, but never tried it in water. No problem with ceramic tile.
