Hi there,
It is good to have heater on hand for some medical process. If your fish room temperature(tank water temperature) is above 68'F, you don't need to use heater at all.

All,

Several Years a go it becaome obvious the Thai breeders were raising TVR at 90F mosyt of theyear and getting monsters in about six months. So I continue to experiment;

I now float my eggs in a bowl in the heated baby tanks, see blog breeding segment for pics.
also raise most fry and hatch eggs at 70F to72F.
I did andexperiment , ( that continues) where I feed one group of goldfish at 65F and the others at 78F, same food and samesized tank, the hotter fish are 2X to 4X as large. I believe this is a situation where the fish are able to better metabolize food at a higher temperature because of their primitive gut. I
This winter I am raising Five tanks of young Goldfish with me plecostomus breeding stock, the results are astounding . I am not sure I would do this with adult fish,except for below.
I raise the Ranchu breeders to 70F to get them to breed at the full moon.

The cost is pretty high but getting fish to breed at will and fry to grow faster is pretty important.

Gary,
Raising the temperature and feeding a lot: is it going to shorten the life spam of the fish? What other side effects can we expected?

Fred,

I told you that heavy feeding your fish will not harm them if you monitor and watch out with their age and water quality. At certain age of goldfish, food might be feed at the right amount and kinds. Raising and grooming fish, as long as their belly are not down much, i believe they'll be fine and also not shorten their life.

At certain temperature, their digest system will work differently as you already know. I keep my fish at 77-82F range. And I also do heavy feed my fish with 2-3 times water change a day. A plan is, when they're hit about 2 years old or about 6-8", i'll reduce amount of protein food and feed more with green.

There are animal model studies out there that show faster metabolism and more food shortens life spans.

I would be curious to see how many years they lose.
