I want crystal clear water with non stop feeding.

I don't change water yet my goldfish are so happy that they grow so fast an Inch/month at least.

My water won't discolor or stain with time still crystal clear like spring water even after a year.

For that I want water falls high tall filtration systems.

Is that possible or am I just asking too much?

There is such thing called Bakki Shower. The price is high and its so bulky.

So what do cheapskate like me have to do to make this wish come true? :D

maybe you might want to have a look at these filters as described and constructed by K.L.Novak

Now that my hang over from the other night is gone... :)

Fred - Thanks for the info. That is what I was thinking also. I am thinking waterfall filteration. Its basically cheapskate bakki shower with extension for plant filteration.

But the problem is the size that I would need to get effective filteration going... the bulkiness of the system as well as the amount of plant and algae needed to effectively utilize the by products of our beloved non stop Pooping-machines... :D

Sump filters in Salt water tanks does a very good job of consuming Nitrates... Unlike fresh water tanks Nitrate is very dangerous to salt water varieties.... so salt water gurus actually does monitor their Nitrates carefully.

Now to the subject of filteration media/bacteria housing...

The bio balls - I don't even know why they call these plastics things bio balls. To me they are very inefficient plastic balls where the path of water travel can change frequently and with that you will loose bacteria. They have extremely smooth surface for the bacteria to cling on to. Its like living on the fragile land slide areas.

So my first solution is remove bio (crappy) balls and replace them with cheap lava rocks....

The sumps are designed to sit under the tanks... This design compromizes the duration of the water in contact with the media. In theory, the longer the water stays in contact with the bacteria rich media the more nitrification process will take place. Which means we need more height or steps in the sumps and finer grained filteration media which also acts like water polisher unlike "bio (crappy) balls".

So the final step would be the plants/algae filteration.

I use a filter sock to catch debris, then I have four X large media bags with Ehfisubstrat Pro, and Ehfimech{Eheim media}. My tank is planted.

I have used my window box trickle towers to some success in gassing off the water. I think I have a DIY thread about them somewhere. Bakki material is stupid expensive; lava rock isn't.

Bruce how's the lava rock working out?

I've been using coral chips and the results have been great.
It keeps the PH about 7.5ish for a long time.

Thanks. TheTruth. I would love to see your waterfalls. Would be great if you could post your waterfalls details here. I am sure everyone would love to see it.

This thread is a bit old since when I started it.

Currently, I got great filteration without de-coloring with 1/8 inch lava rocks (small rocks) with wet dry filter (sump filter) and heavy plants. The water stays crystal clear with heavy fish load and feeding. It makes a huge difference especially I feed Gel food and everyone knows how messy it is. I don't put too much gel in my gel food and the water is very cloudy every time I feed them. The cloudiness goes away in about an hour after I fed them Gel food.

Water change is only once a week and still crystal clear after one week.

I don't use Bioballs (bio balls doesn't work for goldfish tanks) or expensive media (not enough pores to hold enough bacteria). Cheap lava rocks did the trick.

I would love to see your (TheTruth) version. I am always looking for things to improve.

Why not just keep the tank size big. When I say big, what I mean is that 20gallon for only 1 goldfish. A standard canister filter should be able to cope up with that.
