Has anyone out there thought of maybe trying to breed smaller goldfish?
You could keep more of them and they might not take up so much room for just two.

It's very easy to stunt goldfish, simply keep them in small tanks and restrict feeding. They will still breed but the young will grow normally unless they too are stunted. They real question though is why do it? If you want to keep small fish surely Guppies, Platies or some other tropicals would be a better.

If you want something beautiful is a small package, nothing beats a halfmoon betta!

yeah, but I'm talking about being able to keep fish without a heater and that aren't so prolific and don't try to kill each other but also aren't huge and needing lots of room
goldfish also have longer lifespans than most tropical fish, and are less picky about food and water

I know everyone keeps pushing bettas........but they are really cool and dont always try to kill eachother. I have a 10gal tank set up right now with 3 females and one male and everyone gets along just fine. :) you could easily pick up a 10gal starter kit (it will have everything you need including your heater n filter which are as simple as pluging them in! add a few fake plants for hidding places n bingo! your good to go! I feed mine frozen bloodworms n they go crazy for them! They are easy and fun to watch. :)

Spawns of bettas can be raised together with minimal fighting. Only after you isolate them(which must be done to if you are going to show them or even spawn them) do the instincts come out. Of course fancy bettas fighting skills not the greatest. Lines of bettas that are specifically bred for fighting, well thats a different story.

I absolutely LOVE bettas but I agree why not breed some of the larger breeds smaller? not stunted just pick the smallest healthy ones and breed them. Then almost everyone could enjoy goldfish :)

Think about it we can breed things bigger why not smaller?
