Just wondering what a good ratio of small tanks (fry) to larger tanks (grow out) is and what sizes everyone is fond of? I have a room 22ft 9" x 23ft 9' and 7 ft high to work with...
I was thinking of 20 or so 20 Longs for fry then some 30&40 Breeders and 55's maybe 75's and 125's suggestions.....?
Thanx in advance:exact:

Wish you guys would talk in tank measurements and not gallons! I would have 5ft x 6ft ponds on the ground, well preferably slightly off the ground if floor is concrete so drainage can be installed, and 5ft and/or 6ft x 2 ft x 9 inches deep tanks above.

had mine made 36x 12x12, 48x12x12. 60x12x12, 72x12x18 [width], floor tanks are all the 72's, 2nd tier are 60's and 48's and top are 48 and 36. all fry are hatched in white plastic 14 gallon tubs. went to Marc's store found xmas storage boxes 52x12x18 width reinforced plastic 65 gallons for $ 9.99

I like 20's or 20 long for hatching eggs and initial feedings
Then I find 40 Breeders are really nice, if drilled, as you can change or vasry the water depth.
At a ripe old age of 4 weeks, I then move to much larger quarters for grow outs, tubs, 75's or 125's. Doubling there growth area every two weeks is critical. I tend to think your access to big tubs is pretty important.
Now, if you are doing TVR - you must consider water depth pretty early on ( my guess is 8 weeks is critical). While I have seen Johns' and Daves' set ups, both are unique; John is designed for TVR and Dave is designed for initial grow out only ( does his raising elsewhere). Short water depth is very important for wen development in Ranchu, but it is extremely difficult to prevent deadspots of bad water quality in shallow tubs, thus complete water changes are important ( and painful)
As you are going for fish with dorsal fins, i reccomend ignoring the extreme shallow (<10"), that TVR people often cackle about.
Think clean water and doubling tankage size every two weeks!

I just moved my fry that are a little over two weeks old from a 20 long to a 33 long. I feed them live baby brine in the morning and evening during the day they get meals at 9,12,3,and 6 via fish feeder recommended by Gary. I am using Otohime and the fry love it. Water changes twice a day. I only have close to 50 fry. Due to the fast rate of growth I have already culled several times. I guess my next move will have to be to my small indoor pond 4'x4'x18".
