Picked him up from Paul (http://www.xxxxxxxxxxxx.com/) last summer when the AGA had a show outside chicago. I've come to appreciate his TVR body with "SVR" tail as it sets him apart from some other "SVR". You can check out one of my posts way back to see what he looked like when i first got him.
He looks small, but is close to 5 or 6 inches long now, thanks for your constructive input!

You need to feed more. It looks skinny.

:confuse:
I have been trying to! I honestly cannot make this fish fat. Hikari lionhead 5-6 times a day in small quantities, than a custom mix of bloodworms, brine shrimp, and algae tabs 2-3 times. They also get a healthy mix of fresher snacks like lettuce, lemon, etc... He is currently housed in a long 60 gallon, about a foot deep with 50% water changes daily (i have lots of time at the beginning of the semester =]!) He gets longer, and larger, continuing wen growth, but not fatter!
Here is what another of my fish looks like, on the SAME diet for the SAME amount of time...she is only a month older...
Perhaps his long body length makes him look skinnier?? :youtellme:

Oh, and let me start referring to them as japanese lionheads, to avoid confusion. I need to get in that habit

I think you are doing a good job. His stomach is wide, the reason he looks skinny from the top is he has a genetically narrow peduncle.... This is not important for side view, hence he will look skinny from the top..... You just have TVR fever now....LOL

I have to admit, I am starting to see the appeal. For now, I don't have the money to buy TVR, but once I can afford a female (pref with a nice tail) i think this guy will make an ok stud. I really like ranchu tho, so for now I can 'practice' with SV

For the first piece, as a SVR/ JP lionhead, I would like to see more deepnest. For me it looks like TVR dept with SVR tail and penduncle. :)

It's a good tactic. I started with SV too.

Thats true Fred, but as you know alot of the Japanese lionhead are developed from Japanese (TVR) lines, hence they have longer bodies then their Chinese counterparts......
Mike, email me privately, and as soon as I can possibly get you something, I will. We need breeders....

Oh, I got a Japanese lionhead from Paul and crossed it with a Mita last summer, small, and horrible, spawn. Culled them all......... tons of STs and dorsal spikes. The few that were passable had weak peduncles. I would get a related pair for your first...

Dan,
Isn't it the way we raise? For, my KC TVR, I put them in 12in water and they have both length and depth(unfortunately).

Yea, I am all for proper body length..... 1/3 to 1/4 head to body ratio...

So, if you want to develop SVR, can't we just put TVR strain fish into deep water?

Thats a good question. I do know the selection for higher and sharper back curve( which is the main thing side view) means shorter backs, maybe 1.5 head to body ratio..... Going that route, forget about swimming motion, the fish will waddle around. With a narrow tail set the fish will struggle with balance anyway... Ok, enough talking about this side view stuff, it is creeping me out..LOL

This reminds me of the time i tried to fix my grandma's typewriter, haha, nothing frustrates quite like regression.
But as you were saying with your Mita cross, do you think it would be worth it to try breeding with an unrelated female? My plan has been to try and breed this summer when I can move my tubs outside and really have room to do it right. I have been through an accidental spawn once, and I didn't get a chance to take my time with preparation and patient culling.

A line of Ranchu from Japan........ John and Andrew in the UK breed exclusively the Jinchu Kai line. We got a 4 week old batch of Jinchu Kai line fry at the last social and split it up there...... Those young on Freds video are some of them..
