There is a thread about 2010 projects and one of mine was a pair of Thai Orandas. I also mentioned that it would be nice if we would be done with the current batch of ryukin before they started. Well, that didnt happen! Have a coupla hundred oranda fry this morning to these parents:

This winter is busy! I got two spawns myself! So what makes them Thai orandas??Just curious.

The origin "Oranda" part of my metallic Oranda line came from red caps too. I thought that most of the resulting young would be silver but luckily they weren't and perhaps surprisingly too much silver has never been a problem. Whilst the original red cap had huge all round hood development, it has been noticeable that in the last two generations the fish have had reasonable hood development on the top of their heads but little around the sides. I will be outcrossing to normal Chinese red Orandas this year in the hope of improving all round hood development.
Good luck.

I was going to ask that same question, Suphi.

I would use an aquarium vac with plenty of sponge filter material stuffed up the first few inches

Believe it or not I use a 200gph pump! It has a foam cover over the intake and I do not suck any fry up. I fill by attaching the other end to the sink and flowing the water back thru the pump adding declor directly to the tank.

Here is the pump in use:

Bruce, that's very similar to how I do WC...just without the foam and my pump is outside the tank instead of staying submerged.

What I do is to try and transfer the fry into several plastic basins and have another set of similar spare basins. Fill the spare basins with water. Use a fine net and scope the fry into the new basin every time I do a water change. In my case is every 12 hours. Use light aeration. This allows you to perform 100% water change for the first 2 weeks.

If you are not comfortable with this method, you can use a big air-stone with the air-tube inside the container. You can use it to drain the water from the container. If you need a faster flow, use several sets.

Someone said that they cull at 3 days; WHAT? I can't see what Im looking at at 3 WEEEEKS... LOL

Steve said in a post to try to find reasons to cull; I'm still trying to find more culls in our November Ryukin and having trouble getting the number down. I think it is just me not being experienced enough to see the little flaws. In the ryukin batch I have about 2-3 dozen that are much smaller than the rest....... I have them in a separate tank now but there isnt anything wrong with them except size.... what to do? :)

That 3 day statement might have been a typo. They are barely freeswimming so it is highly unlikely that you could cull based on any realistic criteria.

As for size, I have found that some of the smaller fry will catch up if you give them a chance. However, most of the runts stay as runts. I have never been able to predict which ones fail to catch up except for some obvious ones - pinched mouths that you miss until the fry get quite big, troubles with buoyancy (subtle ones that certainly affect their ability to feed).

Best of luck!

We have the fish split up into 3 55s now and will need to find more room before long... Doh! I'm thinkin' we have 4-500 babies. :)
Here is a video shot 02/16/10 of just one of the tanks.

They look great. Keep slamming them with food at this stage, as much as they can eat. If you got extra space you might want to pick out a few fish with good potentials, give them lots of space and go crazy with bloodworms.

Suphi.... Yup, we are trying to keep up with their eating, tough to do, the little crappers are eatin' machines right now. LOL
Need to do another culling but I would prefer they get a bit bigger first. Need the room tho. :)

If I were you I would go head a cull for the strongest tails/peduncles, widest/highest dorsals, and broadest heads. Then start pounding the BWs for head growth. You have a big enough batch to be picky, and you want want to focus on hood development. That requires lots good protein. You don't want to sacrifice the development of the best ones for the benefit of the medicore ones.

Spent a good portion of the day today culling orandas. I think we could keep twice as many good ones as we have but we can only keep just so many... lol Hopefully we will get a few out of this pairing. If it wasnt so early in the year I'd throw them all in an outside pond and let them grow for another 4 months.

!!WoW!! sooo for you guys who breed, what do you do with all of them? I know you all cull for quality but how far down in numbers do you take it? It obviously takes a lot of space too! Is there a way to sex them before they are mature enough to breed? soo many questions! lol Breeding is deffinatly on my list once i get my basement in order! ;)

Good question......... If you have a spawn with 10% high quality, thats a solid spawn. Some are 0%..... Depends how high of standards you set. But my piranhas need love(food) too........LOL

Love them Bruce. I know nothing about showing but for personal preference on looks I love the almost all white one, I am addicted to the white ones lol.

Hey do you have any video of the ones from that same spawning that you kept and grew out at home? Love to see how those turned out too.

BruceP
12-06-2010, 01:04 PM
Aimee.... No, they are kinda all over the place. The best ones are in a 700 gallon tank with a bunch of other fish. When I get some time I'll plop them in a 30 or sumptin and shoot a video. I might put the group in the video in the 1000g tank for the winter, there is room for them in there.

cant beat an oranda for cuteness and beauty! Funny how the red cap also got red fins on that one! The localizing "gene" or whatever still amazes me(like tancho, and red pompoms) so are they now "American" fish? Descendant Thai?lol
btw i love your fry wc device. I think I will make one. (as i sit here with my back thrown out from wc)
