Even if the picture represents an Oya, I find the funtans a bit excessive. In the top view, the funtans do not make the head rectangular anymore. But that's me.:youtellme:

I love the "horns" and it is the direction that Japan is going. I do understand that some like the older style though.....

Gentlemen,

I can see where you are going with this but please do not let a drawing get in the way of producing and developing good Ranchu.

Ranchu are, by definition, very different to other Kingyo. There are a number of different areas on a Ranchu that define its style and whilst a drawing may represent "one" ideal, that does not mean that a Ranchu with, for example a different tail or head to your drawing is a bad Ranchu.

You will see, when you look at the photos of a Ranchu Competition that there are many variations of head, body and tail shape - these are all a matter of taste and style. What will be common to them all is that as individuals they are in balance and that is what really defines (show) quality.

Kind regards

Andrew

I see what you are saying. I look at Johns drawing as a training aid vs something super rigid. It gives a general visual idea of what were are after. I feel the side drawing especially useful.......

Funtan is a little much and the tail shoulder is a cool but there are many other forms. I t might be better to have several head types and tail types illustrated. I think Russ's ilustration is more practical from the BS, while I like are projecting Funtan not sure it is acchievable in Tosai. I hate the thought of discontinuing lines because of a a horned funtan fad that is difficult to produce in Tosai.

Also think the drawing should show the bracelot...

every 10 yrs or so ranchu standards evolve.its a nice drawing but i cant change every time they change the look of the fish.the 80s had round jowls. the 90s had rectangular look from the top,and now they have horns.the horns must give the fish trouble eating and they probably have to be kept by themselves

I personally like this illustration very much. I do believe that many here would disagree though...even John. If this was a real fish, we would be seeing posts like..."too short, tail too close to the belly, tail set is too steep...to much like side view, too round....and I am sure more objections".

I like it...looks like a good side view! I think it was Truth or Judge that wanted to make a good side view that was a good top as well...

Would this be it?

Am I mistaken? I think this illustration looks like old style, minus the horns???

Hi John (The Truth),

I took a look at the ranchu in your album, and they do indeed look very healthy. It may be my imagination, but it seems like some of these fish are longer in body (more top view) than some of the fish you showed us at the past Breeder's Social. I wonder if you have found enough diversity in your established strain to be able to select for slightly different types as standards or tastes change.

Cheers,

Rob

The drawing was done by John Parker. I believe it will be used for the UKs new ranchu standard as well....

The drawing is ment to serve as a guideline to help visualizing good fish, not a strict interpetation. Yes, the side view drawing I feel is the most helpful... Keep in mind, ranchu as a japanese breed are ment to be enjoyed from the top, but champion ranchu are judged from all views........
