In Goldfish Clinic, Myxobolus diversus and fin rot was discussed lately. My trio of Bristols developed somekind of fin rot almost immediatly after a spawn in mid-december, which I treated first with a fin rot medicin (don't remember which, cause I used it all up and disposed) and then with Melafix for a week.

The tail fins are better after 2 weeks or so, they're growing back. The thing is that the same Bristols spawned again today in the partly Melafixed water. I say 'partly' because I did a partial water change 2 days ago and did not add Melafix again. As the female showed signs of shooting eggs imminently, I added a few mops and got eggs today.

So, here are my questions again: Will the Melafix affect the eggs and will the tail rot infection affect the fry?

Hi Gerard
I think it unlikely that fin rot if caused oroginally through damage will affect fry although if it's down to bacteria then I guess it's possible. Perhaps a complete water change with salt added at 3 grams/litre might be a worthwhile precaution.
Melafix is quite a gentle treatment so I think it should be OK in a fry tank. However I know one of the Doctors in the company which manufactures it so I've emailed him and will post his answer as soon as I can.

Hi Gerard
Dr Peter has responded as follows -
"It should be fine. I have successfully used Melafix on livebearer fry (e.g. Guppies) but have never used it on egg-layer fry (so far, never had the need).
According to API, Melafix is safe for all fish fry, including hatchlings. As you know, it will deal with a range of bacteria infections. I have asked API USA if they have any specific data regarding Melafix and goldfish fry which might be of interest to participants of the goldfish chat site and am awaiting their reply".
Hope this helps.
John

Thank you very much John, for these information! Monday's Bristols eggs are fertilized. They are in new water and they look healthy. I'll keep you all posted.

300 to 400 Bristol Shubs fry are free swimming and eating bbs.

Oh! they are F2 Whiting/Roberts but they are offsprings of light-colored F1parents. Not dark colored as Whiting's Bristols are expected to be.
