I'm trying to find the "Hikari Lionhead" of veggie/algae pellets. I'm currently rotating Omega One small size "Veggie Rounds" in the mix of pelleted foods, but I have to break them up and they are kind of messy. Thoughts?
(I've also used spirulina flakes before, but I have to turn off the filtration for a few minutes while the fish feed so they don't all end up in the filter = pain)

I do not like Omega One. I used it on my fish not the Veggie Rounds just regular goldfish food. It discolored my black moor, black oranda and fade gold color.
I had to stop feeding Omega One. I found out only after my fishes finished 3 bottles of Omega One. I switched to Hikari all colors came back.
There is Hikari Spirulina. It is for koi but I use that for goldfish...
If your main purpose is to give the fish veggie feed them green pea. Microwave them in bowl of water for 1.5 minutes wait till it cools.
Peel the skin and feed.

I feed fresh duckweed and really like the OSI spirulina pellets, I have used the Omega one veggie rounds and the fish really seem to like it. I have the veggie rounds listed in my Ebay store, if you order one, I will give you free shipping on it.

Guenther... when you say you microwave it for a minute did you mean the lettuce as well as the spinach? And you ONLY feed these two things?

Bruce,
I cut the lettuce or the spinach with scissors in small pieces between 1 and 2 mm. After that I put it in a small bowl with a little bit water. Cook it ~1 minute in the microwave until it is soft.
Additionally I give sturgeon pellets in small amounts because there is a lot of energy in these pellets. The fish are not fat if you do it this way.
Sometimes we give fresh shrimps too because we can not buy any frozen fish food here in this town in Northern Ontario.

I appreciate the pea and lettuce/spinach suggestions - I've done those before, but I am specifically looking for a sinking pellet, because
I am lazy and
I really wonder if aquatic creatures derive much nutrition from terrestrial vegetation, other than the obvious roughage.
The OSI are good, but they mix floating and sinking pellets. I am very wary of feeding floating foods to any short-bodied goldfish, I firmly believe they can turn some fish into floaters, especially borderline cases.

I dont see much nutritional value in lettuce? Kale is high in calcium and vitamins. I used it for apple snails when I was breeding them and the shells where beautiful. I think you have to cook it for there to be any absorption of the good stuff. Maybe I would try some orange or vitamin C to help calcium absorb??Not sure. I just throw in big leafs and they rip it up nice, {orandas and ryukins and pearlscales.} Has anyone tried soy beans or edamame?

I am thinking about algae wafers now. Can I crush them up for fry? I have a fry tank that is brand new with no plants or algae on it. There poo seems a bit 'wrong' I am going to crush algae wafers for the fry. The fry are only 3 1/2 weeks old. Should algae wafers be a part of fry diet? Along with bbs and daphnia? Just this one tank has no plants I have been afraid to add them because of flukes n bacterias. It isan absolutely new tank.
Also are Hikari wafers superior to the rest? I shall have to look for them.

Adults need a lot of roughage and less protein/fat than the usual pellet. Otherwise, they develop visceral fat deposits which promote or exacerbate swim bladder problems. Hence the vegetables.
Fry need a very rich and highly digestible diet for growth. High protein and high fat.

Well...
The lettuce I'm using is corn salad:

This lettuce has very high nutritional values! It's the best lettuce you can finde.
You can see and calculate here how much protein is in it (32%protein/7%fat):

Also I use spinach.
Both boosts the red colour in goldfish also developed often a lot of yellow!:yess:

I tried fresh minced lettuce for the first time yesterday. My fish didn't touch it at first and it was floating around at the surface but then everything was all gone when I checked again in 10 mins, and I gave quite a bit. Anyway this tells me that duckweeds will not last long in my tanks.
I think this might be a good idea as vegetables will help reduce/prevent constipation. If the fish continue to do well this may become part of my daily feed.

Good info, guys. I guess I'll have to stop being lazy and try the microwaved lettuce and spinach. Good to see it basically sinks - nice video Guenther.

Corn lettuce huh! Hmmm Is it expensive? I use Kale because it makes my fish stronge boned and horny. Spinach makes them arm wrestle!
