I have been looking for perfect a bowl for Tosakins and never found one that I like. Couple of months ago I decided to take a pottery class to start learning how to throw pots. I am still in learning process and here is the biggest bowl I have thrown so far. It is approximately about 12” in diameter and about 5” high. I carved a gold fish on it. It will have to go through Bisk firing process then second firing process after glazing. My ultimate goal is to throw a pot about 24” in diameter and 10” high. I will post more pics after the pot has been glazed.

Why do tosakins need bowls?:youtellme: Or is that your personal preference for fish?

Tosakin have a unique tail that displays best from above in a relatively shallow container: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/tosakin/tosakin.htm I understand also (just from reading, no personal experience here) that they may have trouble navigating in a deeper (12-18") aquarium-type setup due to their specialized tail.
OP: nice artwork...

Yup, and unlike mature ranchus that being in tanks at least short term is not deterimental, tosakin tails will collapase in deep tanks, I learned that the hard way....

thanks .... I am still in learning process and that is the biggest (~10") I made so far. My goal is to make bowls up to 24 -30" in diameter. I hope, I will have more time for it after this semester.

Thanks to both of you ( Lisa and “goldfishsong”) for your compliments.
Most goldfish keepers keep Tosakins goldfish in the shallow bowl with very little water movement to get the ideal development of the tail. They do frequent water changes to maintain good water quality.
The bowl that I threw was quite small for a large tosakin. I am still in a learning process and it would be a while until I can throw a bowl large enough (~30”) for tosakin. Unfortunately, I am back in school and have very little for pottery now. It will be a while until I can start making pottery again.
