I have a female calico crown pearlscale that I want to breed for calico crown pearlscale. What would you use to get the best color, black or another calico?

I think the age and size of the female is more important as the amount of fertile eggs produced by a good female will be more than you can handle and also the amount of defective fries will also be lesser. Breeding goldfish is a numbers game. If you want to have more black colour, your best option is to look for parents that display more of the black colours that you are looking for or features you want in the brood.
Early ruthless culling is one of the secrets to producing quality goldfish.

Breed calico x calico when ever possible. As mentioned on other post crossing calicos with ordinary metallics, even black ones, is likely to kill blue and black coloration in the offspring.

I got a blk n wht crown pearlscale that caught my eye. She got bigger and developed a big orange spot. But is still nice. Not too fat but still young. I had one unsuccessful breeding attempt with a blue oranda and her. I am planning to maybe get another pearlscale for her. I think I will try to get the calico markings that have large patches of color. Like tri-colored. She is holding her black so ideally get fry with big patches of lots of black. Who knows though. Good luck.
