The 1st Oya's swimming posture is really awesome, so graceful. That's the flicking motion I'm looking for in TVR, unfortunately none of my fish swims like that.

The good news is you now can really enjoy ranchu since you see the delicate grace of their swimming motion and its importance........

I find the tail motion of the 2nd place ranchu better than that of the 1st place ranchu. The latter seems to have a too stiff tail fin. Or is it the tail of the 2nd place ranchu too soft?:youtellme: John? Andrew?

Some of the postings there are quite interesting. These Singaporeans flew to Thailand to shop for TVRs, packed the fish in their check-in luggages without declaration at the airport, then flew back. Wish I could do that...lol.

Lol, flight from Bangkok to Singapore takes only a few hours. From BKK to US is another story...

Gary, I saw the Video on the AGA site, very impressive....
It was a 20 hour flight for me from Indianapolis to Singapore, long trip. For bettas though, not a problem. I know the guppy judge at Aquarama did the same with guppies...

In my mind, the 2nd place ranchu is a better ranchu than the 1st place one.

I guess we don't have the same eyes. The second place Oya may have the bulk but it's probably an older fish. The way it swims is not as nice as the grand champ. That one is completely at ease in the bowl.

Here are the results of another recent ranchu contest in Thailand. The fish are all Tosai.

Photos of All Japan Ranchu 1st Oya this year (Mr. Kato). The fish is 5 years old, may get Yokozuna title next year if it wins again (triple grandchamp).

I don't know if the judging for swimming is done in a bowl. I personally don't think it would be representative for any fish but that's me.:youtellme:

I'm surprised that this grand champion has a big insertion into the bracelet and the peduncle. Would it be a minor fault? Or is it my eyes or the way the pix was taken?
So white ranchus can win too!!

Looks that way to me also. That fish had already won twice as grand champion. The show is All Japan, so it's really the main event.

I agree the 1st place fish has a better swimming motion, most likely why it won..
Yes, I have been rooting for that mostly white fish(I like them personally) and is seems like it is on it way if it can win next year.
It seems that a slightly broken(1 or 2 scales in) is only a minor fault. That is mentioned in the Hess book in the Japanese goldfish chapter.
