Hi all,
I just hand spawning my R/W Ranchu. The female start laying egg right after i took out water for water changing. About to feed in new water, and seem like couple eggs on the bottom.
The fun begin! Take me 2 mins to find the female that egged. Using 2 Male for this project.
Starting Hand-spawning at around 9.45pm Thu 01/01/2009
Approximately about 2000-3000 eggs i got from this female.
Here are some picture;

Around Midnight, I went back and checked the female that just eggs. And i found out that another female (My Fav) are swimming too slow(all of my fish are really active). I've checked and she's eggs!!
Another fun moment again! I hand spawning her with different 4 male and those 2 male i used the first time, since those 2 male are low on sperm (i guess).
Now im up to about 4000-5000k. Seem like my fav female are produce a better quality eggs, because the first female i hand-spawned had 40% yellow eggs (probably wont hatch).
Now i haven't turn on my heater yet, since the temp are at right 75F. I'll try to reduce to 70-72F by tomorrow.
Anyway, I will update with more picture when they're start hatching.

What an excellent way to start the year! Hopefully my seed Ranchu will be ready for spawning next month but I never hand spawn. One of our major Veiltail breeders in the UK (now deceased) always handspawned his Veils (20 years+) and in the end it was impossible to spawn them naturally. Rightly or wrongly I concluded that the best way to maintain vitality and verility in a strain was to let nature take its course but I guess no "harm" is done if we "interrupt" natural spawnings and take handspawnings in he hope/expectation of increased fertility.

Last night was fun!! I went to bed and Dream that i have 3 more female that laying egg. And i have to hand spawn them and i low on male.
I woke up at 11am (a little late). And went to my fish room to check with my female i hand-spawned last night. They're fine, beside another female seem to different, smimming slowly! So i checked if she eggs? Guess what?.....
Fun begin!! lol....seem like my dream is come true!!!
Now im up to around 7500-8500 eggs! look like i have to go get couple more tank since i used most for stocking my ranchu.
Good luck buddy, I see lots of water changes in your near future!
WOW! Now, the work begins! By all means, keep us up to date with pictures.

Hi,
No I do not treat my water. I just use air-tube suck out those fish that has fungus. Since most to my egg are in the bowl. Once they've hatch. Then i'll remove my bowls out and fungus would no longer my problem.
I'll try to get an update tomorrow. At this point i can see fry's eyes. And about 20% got fungus. Some of fungus i have remove since there are many eggs around.

Paul,
I read somewhere on a Thai forum that the ideal hatching temp is in mid to high 60s. Any comment on this?

when in need of a lot of surface area for a lot of fry I have found that old standby system used for carp breeding works for temporary housing. kiddy rubber inflatable swim pools. also very inexpensive. works well and can be reused when needed. here is link to picture of mine. http://s29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/mikroll/koi/?action=view¤t=DSCN0168.jpg

I am excited for you.
Are you changing any water? With this many eggs I often cahnge water daily until you can see the entire fish in the egg.
I sometimes use a tiny amount od methylene blue with eggs, please don't over do it!
The eggs are best hatched at 66F to 72 F over wise you may effect the sex.
Don't worry about the color of the eggs, the yellow ones probably mean they were a little older and perhaps bigger.
Thax for the effort! GH
