Any interest in a black veiltail?

If the problem of producing blacks can be solved, would a black veiltail be desirable?

I am thinking more along the lines of the black ranchu and black oranda types, not the Moor type.

I think it would be wonderful!

I am always interested in black goldfish. I'd love to see some black veils! Please let us know if/when you do produce some!

Just out of interest, what variety would you use to get the black into the veil strain? you dont have to tell me if its secret:angel:

Don't know yet. No one that I have talked to has figured out how to generate black progeny from black fish that are not Moors!

All of the fry grow up to be wild type metallics, at least here in the US. There is a secret regimen that hasn't been tried yet in the US.

Probably has something to do with daylength.

I have a couple that I would say are black but after about one year of age they are turning red....

It is difficult, possibly genetically impossible, to produce genetically black fish which do not have protruding eyes. Have you ever wondered why other than in Moors the only black metallics are Ranchu, Lionheads, Orandas and Bubble-Eyes? The hood/bubble characteristics mask slight protrusion of the eyes but even so are those blacks genetically permanent black fish or just stuck in the decolouring process? Black fish have been popular for decades and if genetically black but normal eyed fish could be produced I have no doubt that the Chinese would have produced them in numbers long ago. They are currently working on normal eyed black singletails (Comets) but having seen the "black Common Goldfish" which were in fact carp I am not holding my breath.
Mock metallic fish can become very "dark" and going down this route might be a way of producing "nearly black" veils but I'm not sure how readily available such fish in veiltail configuration are in the States. I have them here but have only used them in the past to improve the colour in calico Veils.
Concentration on decent red metallics and colourful calicos would, I suggest, be more rewarding.

John,

Thanks for the reply. I have seen blue belly moors raised by Carlos Perez. They were more like smoky glass - not opaque but translucent. Not very appealing in my opinion. I imagine that would be what black mock metallics would look like.

However, the midnights (comets) are really black. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has figured out what type of genetic system the midnights have.

I am getting close to getting nice calico veils so I might be satisfied for a few seasons until the next itch starts up.

Thanks
