Hey all,

Another breeders social has come and gone. A great time of learning and fellowship. We were able to have a meeting and the following issues were covered:

1. Officers- John Parker suggest we do the Jinchu Kai method of Senior breeders vs officers. After discussion, we thought Garys suggestion of a club opperating committee vs elected officers for at least the following year. This will allow us to get things off the ground more quickly and less formally for the time being.

2. 1st annual ARS show- We have decided to go ahead and hold our first show the Sat of the breeders social(Sept 2010). The bottom line is this way we already have the bowls we need and Gary can handle members shipping fish in to show. He is also donating trophies, so we can do the first show at minimal cost. More info to come as we go threw the planning process, but this show be a once in a lifetime event to attend! Our first show!

3. ARS seed stock- We discussed several options here. One was to do an import from Japan. We can do this if we need to. John Parker evaluated the Itoh/Kudo tosai of mine and Garys and feels this line has great potiental for us as a seed line. Mine are already chasing, so we should know more soon. We also recieved of a shippment of 3 week old Jinchu Kai fry bred from the 05 stock, and after a culling show promise. Myself, Gary, and a couple of other members will be growing these out and will update...

While I deeply enjoyed the ORANCHU lessons and his position of " the only Ranchu are red or red and white, the others are not Ranchu!" I tend to think that a home grown US show has room for a category like Blue/Black/LF/and EDO. Perhaps these fish entered, dilute the superior attitude of the R/rw Ranchu growers but it doesn't have too. As long as they are a separate class, we could still have "Best Modern or Experimental Ranchu". Since we all grow other stuff I think it increases the general interst in the Ranchu hobby and promotes improvement in the other phenotypes....

What say you all?:exact::yess::exact:

There is no reason not to have a special experimental class along with our regular 3 ranchu classes.....

Make sure to take lots of pictures of the UK Jinchu kai show! I wish I was going.....

I would agree! I was excited about the blue ranchu that Harris brought. I don't know if everyone got to see the parent pics, but these fish matured to black, and white with red markings. I also think that the current Edo stocks need help, and could be improved with some experimental crosses. By including these groups, we could encourage these projects.

Well, I would agree too as long as other separate classes are formed along with the ranchus. This would be in accordance with the 5th purpose (Section B) of the ARS by-laws where we talk about Tosakins, Jikins, Shukins, etc. This would definitely also give us an opportunity to show development in other varieties and work/effort to maintain varieties.

Having said that, Ranchus need to be our main stream.

I have no problem making room for new developments, as long as the are room for purists like John and myself. Or I could move to the UK...LOL

Oh, I'm a purist too. That's why I think about out-crossing as a last resort.

So Dan are these secret by-laws or does lots of ARS memebrs get to see them? LOL

Dan, are you going to modify based on the meeting?
Operating committee vs. officers?

bigbettadan
09-17-2009, 04:37 PM
Yes were are going to have to modify them since we decided to tweek things at the meeting. The main thing is we have all year(as we plan our show) to get the structure we want, and make the final decisions at the meeting with our show. The main thing is having something functional we are all happy with. Plus we will know more about our seed stock by then and if we can go more like the Jinchu Kai model.......

Well. let's see what Japanese ranchu bloodlines we have in North America. I gather we have:

Oishi, Mita, Sugiura-Kudo, Itoh, Naitoh, Monden, Jinchu Kai (Nogi), Matsuyamas, Hamamatsus.

Anything else? Who is doing what?

I personally have Naitoh, Monden and JinChu and a lonely Kashino/Kawai.

I think I saw Ogai ranchu too.

It is one thing to have bloodlines in the country, it is another to have quality breeding stock. I know ranchu are part genetics part excellence of development, but you must have the raw material there. I do think we have that in some of these strains......

Well, it's been hard to find ranchus for so many years. Only now can we say we've got some and from some famous lines. Whether the ones we have are high quality or not, at least we've got some gene pools to start with.

bigbettadan

The main thing is to cull hard. But I think we are on the right track....

I am wondering how big of a yard Gary has?? It looks like he lives in a typical suburban neighborhood. I am trying to get a feel for how much acreage he had to work with to create his goldfish wonderland : ) Do you know?

harzan

1/3 of an acre!

He has a basement area that is pretty well maximized and has a few ponds outside for goldfish and a big koi pond that I assume will become goldfish in time...nice set up! But! Goldfish do not need the most space, so if you have a basement or live in tropical area, a small back yard can do.
