Sponge substitute for AC 110 HOB filter

Hi All,

I use AquaClear 110 filters on my tanks. I've noticed the sponges don't last as long as they did a few years ago. I've also tried the Imagine generic replacements with no better results.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a substitute sponge? I've considered giving the Poret sponge material a try, but have been holding off because of the high price.

The necessity of replacing the sponge at $5-6 each every few months is making these filters not such a good deal anymore. The sponges inside my Rena Filstar canisters never seem to wear out.

I don't get it, my Aqyaclears are over a decade old. I just dump them in the laundry tub and pressure wash by putting my thumb part way over the faucet.

We have a bunch of AC110s running and havent replaced a sponge yet. One thing we do is to split the sponge lengthwise. Seem to be able to get it cleaned out easier.

Well, I gently squeeze mine out in a bucket of tank water once a week, just to make sure they don't surprise me and pop up.

After a few months of this routine, they are starting to fall apart and so I replace them. The old sponges were much sturdier.
