View Full Version : Starving Fish

I often take in injured or sick goldfish for others.

I was brought a fish, about 3inches in body. It is reported to be one of a group of 5 Oranda that were purchased from Thailand through a western importer. It is supoposedly less than 1 year old. I was told that it was supposedly fasted for 2 weeks before shipping to the US. The dealer fasted it for 1 week longer and then it was sold, being shipped out. That was 3 weeks fast - and then, 1 week with the owner and one more week with me - 5 weeks without food.

The owner states that of the five, this is the only one left alive. They all died - showing no outward symptoms. It is the often quoted "There was NOTHING wrong with the fish - except that it was dead".

I have it in a 15 gallon qt tank - changed 100% every day and treated with Amquel+. There is a large bubble disk and a bubble stone in the tank.

Ammonia zero, nitrite zero, nitrate zero.
pH is 7.8 gH 100 kH 100 - Ro water combined with well water.

When the fish arrived, I did a scrape and then a 4 hours bath in potassium permanganate.

The fish is alert, fairly active. It shows no outward signs of any problems - other that the fact that is is getting skinnier and skinnier. It has not had any eliminations in the week it has been here, so I could not examine that under the microscope. Scraping reveal no parasites. treated with Prazi, anyway.

I have done a microfiltration of the water after a day, looking for further parasites, but none are visible on the micron paper.

There are no outward signs of ANYTHING that I can find wrong. The fish looks fine - except that it will not eat. It shows no interest in the food at all. If I stuff food in its mouth it just lets it drop out - it does not spit - and does not even try eating - no interest at all. I can see nothing blocking the throat or gills.

I have tried gel food, Hiakari fancy food, brine shrimp (frozen), pellets soaked in garlic, fresh greens, fresh daphnia, bloodworms (frozen), rice, spiriliana flakes.

I am ready to make a food slurry and syringe it down the fish this afternoon. I am wondering if anyone has any other ideas? Do fish get low blood sugar like kittens and puppies? If so, should I add in some glucose to the food slurry to initiate eating response?

I have never had this happen and I wish you luck! Have you tried a syringe and some baby food? Since the fish has gone so long w/out food, it may just be that it needs a little "kick" to get it interested again. Force feeding may be the only way until it starts showing interest again.

Have you tried deworming the fish? Prazi is an option if the fish isn't eating. If something is going on internally, scraping isn't going to show. Coppersafe is another viable option, gets almost everything parasite-wise but be careful with the dosing.

No test is 100% sensitive, even in experienced hands. If the fish is going downhill it's better to treat prophylactically.

Sorry I missed the Prazi part in your previous post. If the fish isn't perking up then there's probably something going on internally (bacterial/parasite/worm/fungal infection or tumor).

Fish wasting away is a classic sign of internal parasite, but other causes should also be considered (secondary infection with bacteria, etc.). The fact that its peers are all dead, the probability of internal infection is higher than tumor. That would be my educated guess. So, I would suggest prophylactic treatment for potential bacteria and parasite infection especially if the fish is getting worse.

I've had pretty good luck with combination of prazi + coppersafe + oxolinic acid, haven't lost any fish with this cocktail so far. My two prized TVRs nearly lying stationary on their side managed to turn around completely (took a week of careful nursing also).

Thank you for your suggestions. They are truly appreciated. I will file the information in my head for the future.

The fish died last night. I failed. Failure is unacceptable. I HATE failure - there should have been something that I could have done - but I did not do in time. It is particualrly frustrating when I have all the chemicals and medications - injectibles and everything - to treat, yet do not.

I am always loathe to start throwing all kinds of things at a fish without a proper diagnosis, but I suppose in this case I should have been more aggressive. I only had a week - and walking though possibilities one by one was not aggressive enough.

Crap.

Don't blame yourself! When you got that fish, it was already in bad shape. It is so hard to make a diagnosis sometimes. I also agree with you as I HATE to use meds unless they are absolutely necessary. I'm so sorry you lost the fish.
