Hey guys, there is a link to the AGAs TVR judging seminar presentation pdf on the AGA site. The link is on the show pics from the AGA Chicago convention. Please discuss here!

LOL. A "futon" is a bed, "funtan" is head growth.

The black one is nice, but it is not a TVR.

The second-to-the-last slide points out the problem with judging all the TVR at once. I think the tosai on the left will be a better fish but it's young age makes it less impressive than the oya on the right. The oya has been groomed well, has a pleasing pattern color (but would be better if the wen was red) and great funtan, but the peduncle is a little weak.

The Japanese group TVR for judging into age classes. However, this too is a precarious situation when there are fish born and raised in warmer climates because out-of-season spawning jumbles up the year classes.

That tosai is mine. I would agree with that assessment. Keep in mind is set up for a presentation, and you pick the best of the 3 and it "moves on" to compete in the next group of 3. I know he put Lionchus and SV in the beginning mixed in to test the seminar attendees. So he kept advancing my little tosai till it got beat by John Parkers Oya. But this is a huge step foreword in the AGA....

I personally would like to see something added on swimming movement to the bullet points. It is really impossible to 100% assess a ranchu by a picture due to this......

To the Japanese, swimming is the most important characteristic of ranchu. Dan, I think when you say "something about swimming should be added to bullet system" this is just kinda missing the boat, imo. What I would say is this: "Swimming should be a primary judging characteristic."

Personally, I am interested in mirroring a Japanese system of judging. Eg: tosai, nisia and oya classes.

My intention was not to downplay the importance of swimming movement...Just want it on there.

With our club, we can emphasize this since it needs alot of education here in the west.

I found the slide show very informative.
I feel it's just as important to see bad examples of TVR's as well as good.
I think we all know how hard it is to find the perfect fish, I usually find myself choosing the one with the least flaws.
If I only purchased "perfect" fish my tank would be empty.
Thanks for the tutorial.
Good stuff.

I have found it takes time to see the finer points of ranchu. Again, alot like learning wine. Because of the importance of swimming, you do need to study live fish as well.
