Are any of the breeders on this form using daphina to feed your fry?
I have about 700 gallons of daphina that I add to my mud ponds daily.
I hoping these will take over the ponds for a late spawn of some koi.

I would love to get a safe and healthy live daphnia culture to feed my youngsters. I just asked our LFS to get in some frozen for me. I bought a culture once online. But it smelled bad and killed some of my fish when I fed it. Haven't tried it since. I know that Janet Purdum raises a culture outside every year for her veiltails. You are in Pennsylvania. It would be a quick shipping time. Maybe I could buy a culture from you?

I will not sell it to you but I will give you some for free.

I have heard that daphnia are one of the best foods for fry. I have seen it recommended by several people.

Patrick, You are a prince! Ok, Let me know when it is convenient for you to ship. Also, what type of simple set up I can do in a big dry wall bucket. I have horses, so can use fresh or aged manure, if you recommend that. I have a 300 gallon pond, and can scoop out some of that water to start a green water culture. Let me know how to set up a "nursery" for the daphnia. I am SO grateful to you. If you send me a private message, we can arrange the shipment.

Thank you very much, Patrick!
The amount of daphnia you gave me today, i think it'll cost me around $50 or more without shipping cost! My fry couldn't eat them yet! Some of the adult daphnia are too big for them. They can only eat the baby one, I think. I know the type you gave me are the smallest kind, but they're some size range on them. Now i might have to stick with newly hatch brine shrimp for a week or so.
I'll be visiting you very soon for more!....Love free stuff! >:)
Thanks again!

Moina is a smaller species which is much better for fry. However, Moina only grows well on green water while the larger Daphnia can be grown at low density on dry bakers yeast or even pulverized pellets.
The trouble with both Moina and Daphnia is that they require a lot of space. The volume of the Moina tank should be at least as large as, and perhaps twice, the volume of the fry tank. The volume of the green water tank needs to be at least twice the volume of the Moina tank.
I wrote an article about growing fry with Moina and you can find it on the "articles and information" page of my web site.
