Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone here can recommend a good wheat germ-based fish food for my fancies for the winter? Everything I find is in "floating pellet form". I really don't like feeding floating food to my fancies, especially as I have a few with SBD issues. If there are not any sinking pellet forms that you know of, do you think the floating pellets would be okay for them if I blended them into a gel food? Thanks!

Check Hikari Wheat Germ. It's a koi food though(choose sinking type)

Does it matter if it is a koi food?:youtellme: What do other members here feed their fish when the weather starts turning cooler?
BTW, Thanks Fred!

Koi and goldfish are so closely related, their nutritional needs are basically the same. The only difference is size, so koi food is fine as long as the size of the pieces is not too big. The Tetra line is sized for koi and goldfish: http://www.tetra-fish.com/sites/tetrafish/catalog/productdetail.aspx?id=1276&cid=118

Nickie,

This is the one Wakin was recommending: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/243157/product.web

It looks smaller compared to Hikari wheatgerm medium pellets prob bec its a compressed, sinking type. You can also use Hikari wheatgerm for GF. It comes in a baby pellet size & soak it for a couple mins.

I would feed based on temp & activity levels of your fish.

Thanks to you all SO MUCH! :worship:
My fish will probably be brought inside for the winter, I am still debating about if I should let them winter in the garage or not.
The reason I am looking for a easily-digestable food is because I have noticed that since I put my SBD-affected fish in the pond, they have done so much better. I am sure a major cause of this is better water quality (0/0/0 params) and all the green algae they have to eat, which of course aids in their digestion. However, when winter comes, I know that alot of that algae, if not all, will die off. Therefore, I will probably experience nitrates again and the fish will have lost their super-green snack. I never knew algae could help so much with fish-keeping til this summer!
So, I am planning on making them an all-veggie gel food to feed this winter, and then another gel food with a little protein. They will get the protein gel food once a week and then the veggie gel food and wheat-germ food the rest of the week.
Do you think I should just include the wheat germ food in the veggie gel food, or feed it seperate? I am just trying to reduce the SBD problem as much as I can. Since being in the pond, my SBD fish have hardly floated at all and I want to continue that as well as I can.
Lastly, I wanted to ask what sort of protein I should use to make my "protein gel food"? I was thinking a small amount of salmon and also mix alot of green in with it, too. However, I do have Pro-Gold pellets, shrimp pellets, and I could also use tuna. I was thinking salmon would be best because of the health benefits it has.:youtellme:
