Hi Everyone,

After more than 15 years, I saw two leather goldfish (scale-less goldfish). I have purchased them along with two linear scale goldfish (mirror-scales) yesterday Sat 11 July 2009.

This time, I took a set of photos to document their existence and appearance, to prove that leather goldfish do exist, no matter how rare they may be at present.

Please refer to the above link where I documented this in my latest blog (with a set of accompanied photos).

PS: These two leather goldfish still show deformities in the fins, though less extreme than the leather goldfish I saw and the one I had more than 15 years ago (please refer to my earlier blog dated 7 March for further detailed discussions).

Kind regards,

Bill L

Thanks for posting -
What I really enjoyed reading, though, was the blog underneath that explained depigmentation in black moors and other goldfish. It helped me understand the process. I'd love to hear other comments on this article.

Anxious to see these when they get a litlle larger, thye seem to be a loty like blue bellies that have been in bred until the quinine is redistributed.

Also I read your Black Ranchu post, this is a pretty cool idea if it works, repordcuing the balck fish is pretty difficult
thx

Hi,

The leather goldfish are not blue bellies, this I can confirm. I do hope they survive and prosper through the winter months here. It has been a cold winter here this year.

PS: As for the earlier black ranchus genetics thread, that is actually under another threads here, thx. Please refer to link:

Site for Goldfish Keepers > Extreme Goldfish Keeping Methodologies > Breeding >
Breeding black ranchus - any success?

and post comments there, so we can group all our thoughts and experience in that thread. Hopefully, someone will 'crack the genetic code' to breed black ranchus like flies. I have put down my thoughts about the genetics of black goldfish, the depigmentation process and the genes involved (involving 2 pairs of pigmentation genes). I will add to it about other thoughts I missed when I drafted that in the first instance back in June.

Thanks.

Kind regards.

Bill
