...breed for profit? How do you sale your fish, ie, do you have your own websites or what venue do you use to sell your fish? I only know about Paul and Steve.:)

I sell a few fish to help the feed bill once in awhile, but that is not my objective. My objective is promote the TVR here in the states and breed the best ones I can. If profit is your objective, it makes more financial sense to import rather than breed. Most people that breed do so for the love of the hobby more than anything else, especially when you consider the time involved....

I have been breeding my fish for nearly 10 years now.

I have never sold any.

For the amount of time it takes to produce a really nice veiltail, I should charge for 1-2 years of work. This is because I really only produce 1-2 near show quality fish per year!

For an adequate return of investment, the price would not be a realistic price that anyone could think was reasonable.:money:

I am a recovering professional goldfish breeder. I grew up in a gold fish farm in Hong Kong and spent my first 18 years breeding all kinds of tropical fish and goldfish. I am now breeding vail tail (from Al Foster) and trying to breed Bristol (from Gary) for fun. As a hobbyist fish keeper in the last few years, I made much more money by breeding guppies and bussy noise catfish than from any other fish combined (discus, angle fish, goldfish, etc.).

Breeding fish for $$ will take away all the fun.

Goldfish are for sharing. The more people introduced and involved, the better.

I sell about 15 boxes a year, it neither pays for the food or the electricity. It is about the babies turning color, fish buddies, and the creation of better fish for enjoyment.

Breeding Goldfish to say the least is a labor of Love. I think we all breed and raise the goldfish out of respect for a tradition in search of perfection. It is an unquenchable thirst to create "The Perfect Gold Fish". If it were easy to do, the motivation would be gone.

I used to breed fish - live bearers, rose buds, zebras, Angels, goldfish, Siamese fighting fish and sell it to the fish retail stores when I was about 16 in Asia. I love breeding and raising fish. It was more of a hobby than profit though I had dreams of becoming the largest quality fish breeder at the time.

Now in the states, this bug bite me again when my brother gave me a fish tank for my birthday.

Now I am breeding SVR ranchus which I bought from Paul when they were very little with only gray color on them. I wanted to produces high quality Side View Ranchus for my enjoyment as well as if there are extra to sell to serious goldfish hobbyist.

In the states, it is sad to see people associating goldfish with feeder fish and goldfish are not being taken care of properly.

Now I am even considering building a big wood tank in my back yard to raise highest quality fish.

I know Tommy from Dallas who import high quality goldfish instead of breeding. Yes breeding takes a lot of time especially in the states when water has to be treated, weather changes etc. Thats why I am seeing a lot of breeder from Haiwaii who has weather advantage. Cool... :)
