Any one here feed meat to their goldfish ? I remember worms being discussed a while back and I thought to myself that as worms are just strips of meat I might just as well try meat. I cut a pigeon into worm like strips and they go mad for it, it seems to be their most favourite food ever.

All "meat" is not the same. You are looking for something with the right amino acid balance. You are more likely to get the right balance from a "meat" which the carp evolved to take advantage of. Fish, crustaceans, annelids, insects, etc. But, pigeon??

I think pigeon is good because it's very dark and bloody and easily digestable. I have been feeding quail for the last couple of days and they seem very happy with that too.

I'm sure meat must be a lot better for them than the dry fish food I was feeding them in the past, and it does not cloud the water.

Surely you're not feeding them an all meat diet?

I'm feeding about 80% meat, the other 20% is just shop bought fish food. They are doing really well on this diet, and their colour seems more defined. I have not had them long, but they seem to have doubled in size. The tank looked pleanty big enough when I first got them now it looks on the small side. I will have to fork out for a bigger one.

I have been feeding canned tuna, shrimp ( frozen coctail and other fish for decades. I killed a bunch of fish with a beef heart experiment about 15 years ago. I also tried blended calf liver, no so good.

I soak for a short wjhile dried earth worm s and feed routinely

I have noticed my falcons do not do well on any cow meat, they have trouble digesting it. I feed the same meat to my goldfish as I do to my birds and they all seem to be fine.

Here's a couple of pics I took today.
I think I'm going to have to cut some of the brain off the first one or it will not be able to see where it's going soon.

I would be weary of trimming the wen (or 'brain') of your oranda, unless you see its really having trouble, especially because his is so nicely formed. I've had lionheads whose eyes are fully covered live without it affecting them at all, although I've heard of people's orandas swimming unbalanced because of such large wen. Be sure you use sharp sterile instruments, and a clove oil solution to put the fish under during the surgery.
Your best bet is to have a professional vet do it!

The vets in Saskatchewan are worse than useless, the only thing they are any good at is charging. I had to take a bird in for a blood test recently, the vet did not even know where to find the artery.
I will see how it gets on before I trim it, it's happy enough at the moment.

I always thought that goldfish were omnivores and needed veggis in their diet, as well? By veggies I mean greens, such as seaweed, algae, etc.:youtellme:

Nobody knows better than a goldfish what goldfish want to eat.

This is Brian, ( on the left ) he likes to eat brussel sprouts :youtellme:and the occasional coyote.

How do you train a golden eagle not to kill you?

Do you not worry about parasites when feeding all this meat to your fish?

No more than when I feed meat to anything else.

Was this the one you ended up cutting into "worm-like strips"? lol
And perhaps you should try feeding them Golden eagle...if the name is any indication, it would be great for their color! :yess:

I don't know why but I can't help but get the feeling that feeding meat to goldfish is not taken seriously. To me it seems to be entirely natural for goldfish to eat meat, after all my goldfish are related to my eagle, both species have scales and both species lay eggs.

I think feeding pellet or flake food to goldfish is completely unnatural, the poor goldfish don't have any choice but to eat it or they will die. My fish just ignore it nowadays as they get proper food, my eagle ignores it as well which I guess proves my point.

Wait, so your eagle refused fish food...which proves that fish food is bad because eagles are biologically related to goldfish?

Just wonder, since they are so similar, have you ever confused to put the eagle on the fish tank and try to fly your goldfish? :-S

When I was a kid my did used to feed our black moor little bits of raw beef stew meat. That fish got huge and fast. She lived for quite a while. My dogs and cat always try to eat the fishes flake food. I caught one of my dogs trying to pull it off the shelf! I guess all animals like different things. I don't think I will be feeding my fish beef anytime soon though. I would be to scared something would happen to them. Although I have seen it work before.....:youtellme:
